The Crazy Scot, #3
All done with the CDL part of training, we graduated yesterday. This coming Tuesday, I go to testout for my license. Nervous? Oh yeah!! The exam is in three parts.
First comes the "pretrip check". The state has a 113 point check list that you are allowed to miss 25 on. It's actually more simple than it sounds. You have to check the engine compartment for faulty belts, hoses, wiring, cracked, loose, and properly mounted fittings, like your cooling hoses, alternator, etc. Then the suspension, then the brakes, and the axles, etc, etc, etc. Basically any safety items and lights and indicators
Then comes basic manuvering. Straightline backing, forward stop, buttonhook turns, right turn, and alley docking. You can miss upto 9 on this one.
And lastly, the road test. The examiner rides shotgun, and has you drive a predermined course thru traffic. Right and left turns, starting, stopping, shifting up and down, and calling out bridge clearances, road signs, speedlimits, and hazards. I think it's 25 you can miss on this.
Can't wait to get this over with and go to the Sec of State to get my fullfledged drivers license.:burp::burp:

Hope all goes well in your testout. It sure seems like they make you go through a lot more now days. I can remember getting mine almost 30 years ago now. All we did was go over and take a driving test. I should have not ever let the license go. Never used the Class "A" and it was getting expensive to keep each year and then one time when I did a change of address I lost the Class "B". Didn't realise it until 2 years later and then there was nothing they could do about it.

You'll do fine.

Congrats John. Sounds like you've already passed the hardest part. I bet you'll whiz thru the driving part with flying colors. Your on your way buddie! :thumb:

Thanks guys!!! The only basic manuver I've had a little problem with is the alley dock. I can still get the trailer in where it's supposed to be, but I'm not happy with it.

Yep, almost done, then I can learn how to drive!!:yum::yum:

Hey trakternut, I like your idea of how to pass the driving test. Only problem is the examiner DOES have a nissan. Now if I don't pass, I might take aim with the SuperDude.:pat::burp::burp::tiphat:

John, if you ever haul a load down to northern Indiana, please call ahead so I can get off the road :yum:

Seriously, congratulations and have fun out there! Any idea what type of driving you want to do? Regional, local delivery, overnight runs, etc?

Bob, Indiana is most likely to be at least driven thru. I plan on going with CFI instead of Stevens, and at least the first 6 months, I plan on being OTR, over the road. That way I can get the experience, and make even more doors open. Now you just watch out for those RED Kenworth T-600's. That's what I'll have when I'm on my own, sometime in October.

Like my old sig, "Trucks are red, tractors are blue". Just can't imagine any other colour!:yum::yum::burp::burp::tiphat:

Thanks Jerry!! Oh yeah, I've got myself a laptop now. What I'd like to do when I get on my own, is possibly plan breaks around where people on here are. And I WON'T forget to use the bloody camera!:pat::burp::burp::tiphat:

congratulations, John! Wow! I've done what feels like nothing this past month and you have a new career!

John........since you'll be driving a BIG truck next time you're in the area, you can haul even more stuff from my place back to Michigan......:a1: ....???????????????

Success!!!!!! I'm now a "real" truckdriver!!! I'll be starting at CFI in Joplin, Misery the 5th of Sept!
My mouth ran dry, I was sweating, and putting all my concentration on driving and yard manuvers, and pretrip inspection today.
The examiner wanted me to pull the truck to the curb safely, like it was an emergency stop, set the brakes, turn on the fourways. My first words out of my mouth, "What did I do to fail"? No one had told me that was part of the test. We both got a chuckle out of that.
Anyway, I think the worse stress is over, for now at least. Now I can learn to really drive one of these things.:pat::burp::burp::tiphat:

That's awesome!!! :a1::a1::applause::applause:

Are you actually going to have to go to the State of Misery for the start of work, or do they have a local depot you will owrk out of?

Thanks Dave. I go to Joplin for about a week for orientation and pick up my finisher. I have to log 7500 miles before I'm turned completley loose on my own truck. These miles will all be over the road,OTR, and the finisher won't be driving, just sitting in the passenger seat white knuckling the arm rest! Once I get that done, my home terminal should be in Taylor Michigan, 25 miles away. I stopped in there Sunday and met a few drivers. They all seemed pretty laid back, and willing to share any info. I think I'm going to like this!!:burp::burp::burp::tiphat::tiphat:

Congratulations!!!!

Now, don't forget to use the FF frapper map to see what members may be in route during your travels.

Thanks Brian!! Frapper will be consulted. The first month or so, I'll have to mind my finisher. But after that, I hope to meet more of you guys face to face.:burp::burp::tiphat:

Do I gather congrats are in order, if so, many of them, come to the Uk and see us, driving a big rig, of course!?

Congrats John! Way to go!!!!!:applause: :jumpingSm :thewave: :bounce: :17875: :17875: :17875:
