Going to be a sad day tomorrow.

My son will be taking my old buddy to the vet to be put to sleep tomorrow. I've had this old guy for 13 years, but lately he has been having problem with his hips and is having trouble standing and walking. He will sometimes fall down. Very sad to see when I've seen how active he was. He is like my shadow, he is by my side when ever I am around the house, inside or out. He has been a wonderful friend and companion and will be missed by all the family, but mostly by the grandkids and me.

The one thing that the good Lord messed up when he made the world was not to give dogs about a 40 years life span.

The saddest thing that I've ever had to do in my life was to take one of my dogs to the vet to be put to sleep. She was a pound puppy and I like to think that she had a very happy 12 years of life. She had to have ACL surgery and vertebrae fused in her back. When she threw her back out again when she was 12, I took her back to the vet who did the original surgery. His opinion was that she wouldn't make it through a second surgery. I got a second opinion but unfortunately the diagnosis was the same. It took me a little while but eventually I had to do it. There are people I've known in this world that I've grieved less for than I did for that dog. It's been 6 years and I still miss her.

My condolences on losing a good and faithful friend but the memories will remain.

Sorry to hear you have to put down a friend. May there be a special doggy heaven full of green fields, rabbits and cats for your friend to enjoy.

If/when it does come down to putting down my dog, I've arranged it with a friend. If either of our dogs needs put down, the other person does it if asked. My friend would take my dog into the woods for a nice walk and take care of it. A little easier than doing it yourself if you're not up for it at the time.

ahh, so sad. :( Good looking boy. My daughter had one that looked much like him. He passed a few years ago.

hang in there man. We know it's one of the hardest things to do.

Someone posted this for me when I lost one totally unexpectedly. It helped. I hope it helps you a little bit.

Lend Me a Pup

I will lend to you for awhile a puppy, God said,
For you to love him while he lives
and to mourn for him when he is gone.
Maybe for twelve or fourteen years,
or maybe for two or three.
But will you, till I call him back
take care of him for me?

He'll bring his charms to gladden you
and should his stay be brief
you'll always have his memories
as solace for your grief .
I cannot promise that he will stay,
since all from Earth return,
But there are lessons taught below
I want this pup to learn.

I've looked the whole world over
in search of teachers true
And from the folk that crowd life's land
I have chosen you.
Now will you give him all your love
Nor think the labor vain
Nor hate me when I come to take my pup back again.

I fancied that I heard them say,
"Dear Lord Thy Will Be Done,"
For all the joys this pup will bring,
the risk of grief you'll run.
Will you shelter him with tenderness
Will you love him while you may
And for the happiness you'll know forever grateful stay.

But should I call him back
much sooner than you've planned
Please brave the bitter grief that comes
and try to understand.
If, by your love, you've managed
my wishes to achieve,
In memory of him that you've loved,
cherish every moment with your faithful bundle,
and know he loved you too.

Thanks everyone. Yes it's been a sad day. My son picked him up a 6am for a 4 hour drive to the vet. The neighbours has told me they will miss him also. He would make his rounds everyday to visit them and they would invite him in for a cookie. Somedays he would be gone for a couple of hours. RIP Jake!

I am so sorry for you . I know how tough that decision is . No more pain and he will be waitin in Heaven for you .

Been there, same problem, rear giving out, 12 years old. Had to put down my German Shepard Bear. I put him on the vet's table, went out of his room, sought a dark corner and wept.

RIP fella.

You and me both both bro'. When they came out to the van with a litter to carry her into the the vet office, she looked back at me over her shoulder as much to say, "What's happening dad, why aren't you coming with me?" and I lost it. I left. I got drunk. I couldn't go back there for a week to take of the financial side of things.

Even thinking of it after all these years brings a tear to my eye. OK, more than one tear.

I too know the feeling but in my case it was my 14 year old cat. No one could figure out what was wrong with him. The last time I visited him at the vet's he did not want me to leave. They called us at 1:30 in the morning to tell us to come now if we wanted to see him one last time. We both cried.

that's a good decision I wished I had done the same for MacArthur when he when he had started that .I tried to keep him through the winter so we could have a proper send off for him during the summer, and bury him at camp. around Christmas he went missing he showed up about a month ago as the snow melted after what the ravens (presidential parrots) did to him I couldn't let he rest of the family see his remains it really hurt me cleaning up his remains.
