Getting old, bought a new watch that glows

Not sure about the rest of you but my eyesight is not as good as it was when I was younger.

Picked up a new wrist watch today. It has "tritium" inserts on the hour and minute hands, plus tritium inserts at the hour markers. Most of the watches I've seen that have tritium inserts are very military/tactical/mall-ninja looking. Not the look I was going for. While I don't think its a very attractive watch, it seems pretty practical and downright simple.

Retail seems to be about $325.00 from "authorized" retailers, I picked up a new one from Ebay for $214.

The tritium is supposed to glow for about 10 years. Its a feature I was looking for. LumiNox seems to be the brand that most commonly features the tritium vials, but their watches are very military looking. Ball Watch also makes watches with tritium, as well as a couple other brands.

I'm hoping that in twilight that the glowing tritium gives me enough contrast to easily see the time. Anyone have any experience with watches that have tritium markers? Do they really help? :smileywac

old age is a pain in the arse....when i start straining to see my watch i am getting a talking clock:yum::yum::yum:

I have not worn a watch in twenty years or more. Hate having them on my wrist. Also since I carry my phone with me all the time I have the time on it and I can set it for really big numbers since I can't see anything either.

Lia my dear, here is a pic of Galvi so you get a better understanding of him. :hide: He thinks he is Batman :yum:

yes that is true....but how do you and rusty explain this:whistling:

Christ, I remember when I could buy a good winter beater for what you spilled on that watch. We got some real Daddy Warbucks in this place. I buy Timex Indiglo watches and wear them till the battery dies, then get a new one...about 18-24 months. They're pretty much trashed by that time from wearing while I work. I got a couple of good "dress" watches that belonged to dead family members, but I usually have to be reminded to wear them when I put on my Sunday-go-to-meeting bibs for fancy o-kay-shuns. Thank goodness I gots nobody to impress with jewelry items.

I don't beat up a watch, they usually last me many many years. In fact I've got some that are decades old and still run and look nearly new (I just have a hard time reading the dials!)

I had an Indiglo and it worked well, but its a 2 hand watch, meaning you have to use your right hand to push the button to make it glow. For about $40 they are great. But if this watch lasts me 10 years and is still glowing it works out to be cheaper than buying a new Indiglo every 18+ months.

The other problem with the Indiglo watches is the cases are usually in the 36mm range, this watch is large, its a 41mm case. So in addition to having the glowing tubes, it has a very high contrast face that is as large as the entire Indiglo watch . . . and as I have a heck of a time reading a watch without my glasses on, the choice of this watch actually was something I did quite a bit of research on before making the choice.

I am sure there maybe nicer looking models and better quality but have you ever looked into one of these ? :smile:http://www.maxiaids.com/categories/73/Talking-Watches.html

Uh, no. I had not heard of talking watches. But I seriously doubt they are waterproof if they have a speaker!!! I need waterproof. Also, like the Timex Indigo, that would be a 2 hand watch, push a button with your right hand to hear the time on your left hand.

But the watch I looked at from that page had a 1.5" rectangular face. That is actually 39mm and the one I picked is slightly larger. Larger is easier to see!

Yup I never thought about the water proof part . I have been looking for one I can carry on my tractor so now I am wondering if they are very shock resistant either.

Sure sign of an old fuddy duddy -- wearing a watch. With (most) everyone having cell phones, wrist watches are a dying product.

I just got use to people talking to themselves before I found out that they had a Bluetooth thingy stuck in their ear. Now they are going to be looking like Dick Tracy talking to their watches.... And the watches talk back!

Gave up the watch for a medic alert bracelet 4 years ago. Time is not that important anymore as long as I wake up with the sun.
