Generator not charging...

Finally got the beast running and now it's time to work out the bugs.
First, I'm not getting a charge from the generator.
All the wiring looks good (it's all new).
Ideas?
Does it need to be 'flashed'?
If so, what is the proper procedure?
Second, I'm concerned about what the engine temps will be. Ideas on how to monitor that? I have a previously mounted temp gauge but it is the kind that goes into a block (Bourdon). I don't know what the previous engine was but it has a VW in it now.

What kind of generator is it?? Typical portable generators utilize rotor magnets and shouldn't need to be flashed with DC because it generates DC and converts to AC. Now if it's a bigger unit that utilizes field coils for excitation it would be best to hunt up a manual to find out how the DC is introduced. All that said I'm surprised the field coils are not self excited.

You may have a dirty or glazed rotor and stator assembly!

I believe he is refering to the stock VW generator. The best thing you could do is toss it at a Kristi. Then purchase your self a nice new Bosch alternator. A nice 75 Amper should do well.

I'd love to toss a Delco into it but I need to figure out how to run the cooling fan on the back for the engine.
How do these conversions usually work?
In the mean time I'll follow the directions and giv'er a flash.:flame2:

I just realized that you have one of the older air cooled beetle engines. If that is the case, then you can't do much with it, other than to repower it with a more modern water cooled engine.

Don't remember who, but someone had a Corvair powered snowcat, that was going to send me the generator from it when they repowered their machine......... memory is failing... Junk.
