42 gallons of crude oil produces 20 gallons of gasoline. for every 20 gallons burned in your engine only 3 gallons (15% ) is used to move the vehicle. the other 17 gallons ( 85% ) gets used up by the engine and drive train losses, and accessories.
Diesel Engines
one 42 gallon barrel of crude produces 9.5 gallons of Diesel fuel for every 9.5 gallons of Diesel fuel burned only 2.3 gallons ( 24%) is used to move the vehicle the other 7.2 gallons (76%) get used up by the engine and drive train losses and accessories.
elevation losses 3% loss of BHP per 1000 feet above sea level all BHP (brake horse power) is at sea level
