Gas in diesel motor

Hey guys at work this week our bombardier BR180 had gas put in it, the operator running it didn't know it. it ran for a 1/2 hour when he brought it back, the fuel was dumped and the filter was changed. it runs until it gets warm then it breaks down and has no power, is it the fuel pump and are the injectors junk too??

Worst case: Well you could have scored injectors/fuel pump (messed up) from the gas not having much lubrication.

Best case: The gas could have cleaned out the fuel tank (of the "Normal" algae that goes in fuel tanks) and lines and all the gunk is now in the new fuel filter. Change it out again and put some "Power Services" in the fuel filter before you put the new filter on, fill it right to the top of the filter and screw it on, then put the rest of the stuff in the fuel tank.

Not knowing some other details may have helped a bit too... Was the gas from a station pump or from a drum (may have had water in it).

Is it really cold out or warm? If there was water in the fuel, and it was in the bottom of the tank when everything was stirred up, it could be in the fuel lines as well and plugged the fuel filter.

Good luck!

Have been involved with this happening before. Your injectors are probably junk. The gas burns hotter than diesel and that causes damages at minimum to the tip of the injectors. Change them and see how it runs after that and cleaning the gas out of the diesel fuel system. Hope it runs good after that. Most don't run that long before breakdown. Alot depends on how much diesel/gas mixture. Will run longer of course the more diesel was in there. Good luck!!!!

The gas came from a 5000 gal diesel tank, which the fuel company dropped 3000 gal of gas in it. its been in the 20/40 degrees so Idont think freezing is an issue. I'll try the fuel fillter again and put in some "power services" just for giggles. I'm think I'll pull the injectors to see how bad they are. Thank you for the tips.

yah were talking about that now and SB COLLINS is being sheepish with us. that for the lawyers! I just need to get it to work

Morin64- If the oil company put the wrong fuel in the wrong tank and is their fault(tank was properly marked) They owe you for any damage to your engines!! Have been involved in claims like that. Running on pure gas can do alot of damage. Lucky it was only a portion.

I work for the DOD and we have every sticker and every label no all five sides of the tanks. the safy guys make sure of that

as with all the oter damaged mentioned one problem we had with multi fuel motors running gas was was scored pistions because of the raid burn of gas and the lack of bubracation a good compression test may be a good idea especialy now that you may be dealing with an insurance claim

Ive been a diesel wrench for over 25 years. this happens more than you think its usually not the end of the world. what is happening is the fuel is thinned out and the pump cant build enough pressure to inject the volume of fuel needed.draining the tank and change filter is a start. but you cant get it all. you wont need fuel conditioners as they thin the fuel more (common mistake). what you need to do is thicken the fuel a bit
I usually toss some light engine oil in the tank the drive it around a bit at light loads its worked for me .usually if the pumps bad it wont start well or at all. also the fuel we have today doesnt have much lube in it a little exta helps alot. good luck jeff

I have a old gmc 6.5 with 411.000 miles on it, original injectors , my ex wife dumped gas in it at least 10 times and it still runs so theres hope. usually if you get alot of gas in it they will run utill it mixes then it will lose power often times only able to idle at full throttle. does the gas have ethanol in it ? that would trapthe gas in the pump and make it harder to mix with the fuel oil what kind of pump is it .some have a drain in them . good luck

the gas has 10 % ethanol Saturday ill bring it in the shop and get started ill keep you posted. thanks for all the help

well the exhaust side of the turbo is burned up and the intake side is chewed up. it looks like it got reel hot. the injector are ugly and there is a smell of fuel in the cab when the machine is running. I'm thinking there is burned up pistons and rings. here comes the judge
:boxing: :hammer:

Not good. Smoking? Sounds like at least a partial teardown to see how far the damage is!! If you can pull the oil pan easily that is usually best way to see how the pistons are. Save any damaged parts . Not sure, but if the turbo failed, its not from fuel, but usually from debris clogging the oil feed from bearings breaking up or other components. Certainly not good. Keep us posted!! Good luck.

the exhaust turbin is made of tungston takes a lot of heat to melt it the inducer will break apart on whats known as compressor stall my guess is things got hot in the combustion chanber and forced a high boost situation which stalled the compressor as the inducer soped turning with the loss of the exhaust side expect melted pistons new liners a line bore job and new cylinder liners does not look good

Maybe you needed a new unit anyway, and if the compay wiped it that put the wrong fuel in the tank, maybe they will buy you one with a little inducement from your Lawyer....

At least a new engine, not a rebuild....
