From remote Alaska...Hi from Robert

Hi everyone,:)
I am caretaking a remote(fly-in) fly-fishing lodge in Alaska 100 miles north of Anchorage. It is 40 miles from the nearest thing called a road. This is my 2nd winter and I am the only full time resident on a 7 mile long, 2 mile wide lake full of Rainbows, Lake trout, Pike, and Burbot. Chelatna Lake (surronded by mountains) is the headwaters of Lake Creek which runs clear without glacier silt because the lake filters it out. I get up to 5 ft of snow and as of right now 42 inches of nicely settled snow is on the ground. The ice is 19 inches deep on the lake. The temp is -12 F.
The lodge is open 3 months out of the year from June to the end of August. After, it is mine to enjoy. I love it here in the "bush" and hope to stay here for many years. It is settled right next to the Denali Preserve and has one beautiful view. This last fall we went space age and I have satelite internet and tv.
I came to Alaska from northern Wisconsin in March of 2006. I drove a converted 77 passenger school bus up the Alcan.
I really enjoy reading the FF comments and hope to get through them all soon. It is very educational and entertaining what all of you have been saying. Although I am not the best at the internet stuff I will do my best and make some additions to your site soon where I feel I will not make too much of a fool of myself. Spelling, and computer illiterate you know...
Well... Hey everyone! Robert:wave: http://www.myspace.com/robertlybertsr check out my pics!

Welcome to the Forum, I am about 200 miles North of you on the other side of the Park. Currently it is about -50 this side of the Mountain. Hope you are warmer there.

Mark

Hey Mark,

Brrrrrr, You got it good and COLD!!! :bitterCol
Trying to get the hang of this, Don't know alot and maybe I will be able to quote soon?
It is getting down to 20 below and here by the lake it is warmer than most everywhere around here. Calmer too with the mountains to block the wind. The snow falls though!!!
Thanks for the Welcome and glad to see people from Alaska here. I just love it here!!!
This forum is neat and it seems to work great!

Welcome Robert,

Have a great time and post often! I think ya got the time right now ..... :respect:

Hi Robert. Good intro. It sounds gorgeous up there. Like many, I strongly considered moving up there and getting away from it all. Never took the 1st step though. Please share pictures when you can.

Two ways to 'quote' a post. Click the 'quote' button in the post you want to reply to, or click the 'quick reply' button of the post you are replying to, and then check the box under the 'quick reply window' that says "quote message in reply". It's easy. You'll find your way around here rather quick I'm guessing.

Enjoy and post often. :thumb:

Welcome Robert, sounds like the kind of place/area I would love to live. You can never make a fool out of yourself telling us about your lifestyle as we all envy what you have and are hungry to hear more. :thumb: Start a thread and let us know how you survive the long lonely winter in your outpost. Pics would be great also so we can all dream about the good life you are living.

Are you located west of the Parks Highway? That area North of Petersville always gets a lot of snow.

Re: Hey Mark,

Mark, I am west of Petersville. When people come here by snowmachine they come from Petersville Road and park at a parking lot near a Roadhouse and come 40 miles over the hill crossing Kahiltna River and then up Lake creek.
If you have Google Earth you can type in a search "Chelatna Lake Lodge" and it will take you right there. My locator shows it off a bit but I am at the south end of the lake and I stay in the big building up the hill with decks on back and front.

I haven't put pictures into a URL so I do not know how to add pics. I will try to do some soon. Myspace has alot that I put in there. I suppose I better get an account like "photosomething?" and share some that way. I do not see where I can just download them from my computer?

I was surprised to see such a welcome this morning. It was nice to wake up to. Thanks everyone!!! ::thankyou2 Big Dog, Doc, Jim, RedRocker, mtntopper, ghautz, Mark
:) Robert.

Robert,
I have photo post for all members of our forums to use. Look for the "Photo Gallery" button near the top right of the page .... under the google ad.

Also, you can add pics right here in your post. Here is a link to directions on how to add an attachment to your post (attachment / pic all the same thing).

Thanks for the info on photos Doc...I seen that place but it did not register to me yet! I will get busy and put some in after my first supply plane comes in this morning after 53 days. I got a bear hide and skull to send and a dozen marten pelts to be sealed by Alaska Fish and Game.. A bite of salad will be nice also along with an orange or apple. :)

I have flown over that place on a number of occations when I was flying to Anchorage from Nenana... I tend to not fly in a straight line, too busy seeing what is where, so I do a lot of zigzaging around... Looked like a really pretty spot to hide out on!

I have a rec cabin almost 170+- miles directly North by Northeast of you on the other side of the Park located on Totek Lake by the Kantishna/Toklat River systems. You can see Mt. McKinley out the front door, I would assume that you are close enough to the foothills from the ground you can't see the Mountain from where you are at? Sitting in the plane you can see it, but didn't know about on the ground from that vantage point.

Do you freight all the fuel and heavy stuff in the winter, or do they fly it in during the summer months?

Mark

I can't imagine 53 days between supply planes. You sure have to plan pretty darn well or you'll be hurting. :D

Mark, I can not see the mountain here, you are right. I am too close to the hills to see it.
We fly most everything here in the summer but when I get the airstrip layed out on the lake we do some for me personally. The summer stockup really is big and I have plenty after. Fuels are usually brought in by a 206 with barrels or tanks of propane. The 206 Cesna on wheels really can do a good job and hauls alot more than I thought it would.
Your cabin sounds nice and someday I hope to get a place way out there in the bush for myself. My bus is packed with gear and waiting at the lodge office for me to get enough for land and the rest of supplies.
You got your bet on the Nenana breakup?
Well my plane just called in and I will be out seeing it.
Later Robert:)

I keep betting on the right time, but the river ice isn't following my lead, the purse keeps going up though... if you get bored, here is the site for the Nenena Ice Classic.

Doc, I run out of some stuff like perishables but usually during December it is hard to get here, lake not froze good enough and the snow is soft and deep. The overflow on the lake can be a problem too. It now is great with the subzero temps and planes can land about anywhere on the lake.
The plane came and gone, new fruit, but the lettuce was frozen:smileywac . I got some supprises too like pizzas and cookies. I get tired of making my own. I got 8 loafs of bread too, YEA HA! No more biscuits for awhile.:thumb:
Well I better put everything away and go check ther trapline.
Later...Robert:)

WOW, no offense but your girlfriend sure is harry ..... hairiest girlfriend I ever saw!!!!! :D

GREAT Pics!!!!!! Good job!!!!!!

Thanks Doc.
I wanted to resize the second one but I have more learning!
This boar measured 8 1/2 ft from nose to tip of tail when laying there. the hide stretched to maybe 9 ft after skinning. It is at the taxidermist getting tanned now and will make a great rug.
It worried me for 3 nights, knocking down firewood, pulling my snow tube off the deck and popping it like a grape. It pushed on the back door downstairs and I was feird. I took the "dirty old stick" along with me on the trap line and after 2 holes in it from the 30:06 it fell straight on it's nose. I winched it up with a tree and dropped it into a sled and snowmachined it home.
In late November and absolutely no fat the Fish and Game Officer said I did it a favor.
Not much of a bear hunt as it hung around the area but it was releaving to not worry about it getting into the basement!
Actually the bear was less scary than the last girlfriend I had here! If you look at my finger you can see a bandage from trying to take a large knife from her. That cost me 4 grand to get her to leave. Just alittle too much drinking of the vodka for me. Seemed nice after 4 months talking on yahoo personals but know I have learned my lesson. That was the worst 3 weeks of my life!

There was a couple times I could have let her "walk out" with her drink but I figured I better not! She only went a couple hundred yards and sat. What a nut case! I was stupid I know.:shitHitFan: When She ran out of booze she figured on getting into the lodges "stock". That's where I drew the line. Then she figured she should have my job and was going to stay and have me fired ...charging me with abuse. Me with my finger all flapping in the wind and her smiling. Man, I sure do not know about hooking up again ...ever. It is just scary now!

Nothing like a pushy drunk to make life feel good being alone!:coolshade
