From Crappy to just a sucky day!

Well found out that the guys that are doing my airplane annual had their hangar burn down a couple of days ago, they had no insurance. Didn't know if I lost the plane or not, since I was out of town at the time. So the day started out pretty Crappy not knowing...

But by the end of the day it turned to just sucky, I found out that my plane was outside (still don't know if there is damage from radiant heat) parked a few yards from the Hangar. There is still a lot of the parts inside the hangar which was a total loss. A friend had a Maule on Floats in there as well as a guy's Super Cub that was being rebuilt. Both are puddles of melted aluminum and steel tubing.

All the logs are gone, so will have to reconstruct everything from scratch. Oh, such fun!

Anyway, I have full insurance on the plane, but the other guys didn't so they are going to be pretty Crappy for them still!

Won't get to see it til Saturday, so can still turn back to Crappy....

Oh Mark, I'm sorry to hear that. :(

Well the up side is that the engine and constant speed prop were just rebuilt and I doubt that they had any damage, but the fabric could be bubbled and will require recovering. The insurance will cover that though. So if it is, the plane will be just about new again, I will just have to wait another few months to get that fixed!

Haven't flown it since last spring, the engine was making metal in the oil so I had it redone while I was working the Gulf Oil spill and they were just getting it back together after the engine got back from being remanufactured as was the propeller.

The hangar and my plane (Orange one with red wing covers). I just got the photos from my friend who's plane is in the hangar and all you can see is some tubing from it on the right quarter of the photo... It was on floats and would sit about five feet higher, but they melted...

Another reason to demand an Insurance Certificate by Acord whenever you leave an asset somewhere.

I think your aircraft and you are super lucky. Go buy a lottery ticket. Hope it all works out.

You've weathered far worse than this Mark. You'll be fine, and so will the Plane! You're sensible enuff to have it fully covered; it could have been much worse. great pics...

This does suck, but it appears you're in pretty good shape. There is snow on your plane, and the pictures of the hanger don't appear to have any new snow; if correct, that would mean your plane suffered no heat damage. My old eyes could be wrong, of course. :ermm:

Well went out to see the damage today, my friends plane is toast. The photo of it shows just the tubing of what is left. When it went into the Hangar, it was a pretty red Maule on floats, almost a new engine and a pretty neat all around four place plane.

Now it is just scrap! Hardly tell what it is in the photo! I spent a lot of hours flying around in it with him too... Real loss.

My plane was fine, some people had moved it back away as the fire got going and as stated, it had snow on the wings and such, so that little bit of snow kept any hot embers from burning down into the fabric. The radiant heat could have done some damage coming in from the fire to the inside of the plane, but I didn't see anywhere at this time. All my records are gone though, and will take some time to get them back together. The engine and constant speed prop should be easy though, they were just rebuilt and they have only about 15 min's run time on them!

Talked with the owner of the hangar/shop on the phone, he was kinda distraught, and it is easy to see why. The Hangar had over fifty years of history, memorabilia, and a host of other non replaceable items that are now all gone. Not to mention the liability of all the damage to customers property... not a good place to be!

Then to make it a tad worse, he is suppose to have some operations done in the next few weeks... My heart goes out to him, he is really a nice guy, but should have had insurance for just such a thing...

Yep, been in a lot worse places in life, this isn't the worst by any measure.

I guess the irony is, the one plane that didn't get toasted was insured... Mine! Just burnt paperwork which is a pain, but not impossible to get restored to useable. It does however drop the value of the plane when the logs are gone due such events.

I bought a "rippie" (pull tab) at lunch today and won two bucks!
