Free Credit Report

Gone Flyin'
Okay, this is partly my fault, but I still want to share.

A couple of months ago, I got "the" call from my credit card company. My number was hijacked. Probably from a number generator. Needless to say they caught it before the next statement and all was well.

We decided to cancel our cards and get new ones for security reasons, anyway. We also decided that it would be a good idea to check our credit reports to see if there were any surprises there, too.

Enter "free credit report <dot> com". I went to their site and made an account and got my report. Then did the same for my wife's SS number. My report showed all three credit agencies and my wife's only showed one. Strange, I thought. Well, I came to find out that instead of the $1, my new credit card was charged $29.95 for the "full" report. I didn't willingly sign up for this, but I didn't protest because I did get a more complete report. The following month I was charged $16.95 by this "free" company. I could not find out why, though through the month there were several "notices" sent to my email. This happened last month, while I was on vacation and quite frankly, I forgot about it.

Well I got hit again this month with another $16.95 charge. It seems that I have a "subscription" to their services, which is $16.95 billed monthly. This is one of those deals that you have to contact them to cancel the package once you get your report. This is, of course, all spelled out in the fine print. I have now cancelled all of my "subscriptions" I have with them.

In summary, they have a legal bait and switch going on there and are hardly "free". Beware.

Yep that is a new one going on "Subscriptions" I signed up for a biking event last summer and all of a sudden I started getting a monthly bill on my credit card for a subscription to their services. I called them and they told me I checked the box stating I wanted this service. I told them to get it off because I did not check anything. In two seconds later the person told me that not only am I discontinued that I will receiving a credit for the past charges. I found out later it was this company that caused my credit card company to lock up my credit card due to fraud. I was given a new card and number immediately. I also found out this company hit a lot of people this way also. I wonder how many people catch this stuff? Kind of like the LP company charging me $4.25 per gallon of LP gas a few years back.

None of them are "free".
You should have gone to your bank and had them check it for you, for free.
Each one of the big 3 credit reporting agencies has to provide a free annual report to you if you request it. You don't need an outside agency at all. The best trick is to request one from a different one every 120 days to keep close tabs on your rating.

$65,000 question is how to contact them to do this...

Tried that, too.

It has been a few years but I believe it was through the consumer protection bureau website. I only have 2 cards anymore and they both require them to notify me of any charges over $200. You need a different bank. Mine will pull mine and also does all my notary work for free.

Our "banker" is a personal friend as well. She told us that she could get into serious trouble running a report without an application on file. Maybe this is just a policy at this bank, maybe a recent rule change, dunno...

Anyway, she was unable to help us with credit reports.

I just got a free credit report .................. and brought home a truck .......... :hide:

Banks can't do this any more unless you are applying for something. That was my first stop, they suggested the website.

Speaking of banks and banking what is the deal with all the bank fees that started to appear a few years ago? I mean it seems like the banks are practically stealing from us. I mean ATM fees, killer overdraft fees, check cashing fees and other miscellaneous fees. It is getting excessive.

Actually, for about 4 years I've been on a personal crusade to get "freecreditreport.com" shut down. It is nothing but a complete scam site. It turns my stomach every time I see one of their damn commercials with some grunge band singing some moronic ditty about needing their fucking leach service. I now have at least 9 issuers of credit cards refusing to accept ANY charge from that company and they now have over 100,000 complaints formally filed against them.

Unfortunately, "freecreditreport.com" keeps at least 200 attorneys employed each and every day to keep them in business. The only thing that tells me is that there are a hell of a lot of people who don't pay any attention to their credit card statements and "freecreditreport.com" will only fall harder when they finally go down the tubes. In case you missed it,

FreeCreditReport.com is NOTHING but a complete and total scam (just like AOL - which is almost gone now) that makes a living by preying on those who do not take the time to actually go over their credit card statements each month. THEY PROVIDE NO SERVICE, contrary to what they want you to believe. Whether you know it or not, companies constantly are pulling your credit report; companies you do business with and companies who are looking to extend credit. Ever got a "pre-approved" credit card offer? They pulled your credit report first. You can get off the "advertiser's list", but any company you are currently doing business with legally can pull your report at any time they feel necessary to ensure that you will still be able to pay them. Our credit laws severely need to be overhauled and "FreeCreditReport.com" needs to go out of business, their managers jailed, and the company fined hundreds of millions of dollars to set an example. THEY ARE CROOKS! No possible debate from them. They simply are exploiting the risk/cost vs. reward model and opting to screw everyone they can. Trust me, they know me by name!! I've invited them to sue me for libel or slander hundreds of times until I got a court injunction to prevent them from having any contact with me unless I violate any law. What I'm telling you violates no law since it's 100% true.
