Okay, this is partly my fault, but I still want to share.
A couple of months ago, I got "the" call from my credit card company. My number was hijacked. Probably from a number generator. Needless to say they caught it before the next statement and all was well.
We decided to cancel our cards and get new ones for security reasons, anyway. We also decided that it would be a good idea to check our credit reports to see if there were any surprises there, too.
Enter "free credit report <dot> com". I went to their site and made an account and got my report. Then did the same for my wife's SS number. My report showed all three credit agencies and my wife's only showed one. Strange, I thought. Well, I came to find out that instead of the $1, my new credit card was charged $29.95 for the "full" report. I didn't willingly sign up for this, but I didn't protest because I did get a more complete report. The following month I was charged $16.95 by this "free" company. I could not find out why, though through the month there were several "notices" sent to my email. This happened last month, while I was on vacation and quite frankly, I forgot about it.
Well I got hit again this month with another $16.95 charge. It seems that I have a "subscription" to their services, which is $16.95 billed monthly. This is one of those deals that you have to contact them to cancel the package once you get your report. This is, of course, all spelled out in the fine print. I have now cancelled all of my "subscriptions" I have with them.
In summary, they have a legal bait and switch going on there and are hardly "free". Beware.
