For Sale: Bombadier J-5

Hi all,

I am trying to help a friend sell an excellent condition J-5. By far the nicest one I have seen in person and ranks right up there with the best I've seen in pictures.

The good...

Someone dumped a LOT of money into fixing up this vehicle. Very nice paint job, lots of extras, "new" gauges, and fantastic running gear. The track bands have some use on them, but effectively they are as good as new. Same with the tires and the sprockets. Some great extras on this like D rings, trailer hitch receiver, roof rack, headlights, etc.

The bad...

Like so many J-5s this is a repower. Specifically a 1980 Chevy 250 L Head. That wouldn't be bad except that something is not right with the engine. It overheats quickly. The guy selling it is a mechanic by trade, so he quickly ruled out the obvious stuff (like a bad radiator or stuck thermostat). He is not familiar with type of engine's guts, therefore instead of tearing it apart he instead tried to increase the cooling. He installed extra fans and a high end (race car) cooling pump. No luck. It's got to be something internal and he simply doesn't have the incentive to mess around with it any longer. Someone will have to either tear into this engine or simply replace it.

Both the seller and I are well aware of what the selling prices are for the range of J-5s out there. I've bought/sold a few myself.

The asking price is $7500 complete "as is". It is located in central Maine, USA. It currently in a garage and has been all winter. I think it was stored inside in prior years.

My friend doesn't use the computer much and I owe him several favors, hence me making this post instead of him :D You can send me a PM or an email to islander307@gmail.com.

Thanks for looking!

Steve

Bump to say that it's now "best reasonable offer". There is also a pretty nifty log arch that can be had with it.

Could be, though I would think there would be signs of that. My friend is not easily stumped :) In any case, nobody wants to invest any more time in it as the owner (not my friend) injured his back and so can no longer use it. If you've climbed in and out of one of these even once you'll know why that makes sense.

So it could be something relatively inexpensive, could be something extremely expensive. I had my original Chrysler in my J5 pulled and rebuilt... definitely not something for the faint of heart.

I would guess it is something like a vapor lock waterpump issue or a cracked head whick could cause vapor lock . with out being able to see how it is cooled also my jeep kind of has the same problem and an ir thermometer found th problem it was the radiator was plugged 1/2 way down likely from some stop leak some time in it's life also a plugged or restricted exhaust can cause this.

My hope is that whomever buys it will find something simple once the engine is torn apart. The problem for my friend is, as I mentioned, zero incentive to go tearing into the engine.

In this case both the radiator and the exhaust systems (external to the engine) were checked out early in the process. Doesn't mean there isn't a blockage somewhere deeper.
