Flooding 251 engine

the old trucker

New member
My friend Mike, has a 1957 C18 Bombardier that is close to ready to plow through some snow. He had the original engine out to clean up, install new seals & gaskets & make her purddy looking. He put in a new carb kit & new electric fuel pump that puts out 5-8 PSI. It starts first click of the key & sounds good but when he gives it a shot of gas she will give out a noticeable puff of black smoke. His question is this; Is it ok to run the electric pump or should he go back to the original manual pump or would it be carb problems ?

OT.

Sounds like the float is set high and giving it too much fuel. When you accelerate it pushes this unburned fuel out the exhaust.

I'm not sure but I think the pump pressure is too high. I think I read that carburated engines were supposed to have 4 or less.

I think this is correct also Max at 5 but better 4psi. Needles and seats can only take on so much. A small regulator of good quality should get you there. Or perhaps the pump can be adjusted. Worth a check, as it could be a ball and spring that reulates the pump. Clip some off the spring, for less.
