Firefox burning all available CPU

On a relatively frequent basis, Firefox will grab all available CPU and won't release it unless I close it.

I do have multiple windows open. I've closed the sessions one at a time to see which is the culprit but there's no pattern/site in particular.

Any way I can identify which window is causing it so I don't need to close the whole group?

bring up the task manager screen (control, alt, delete) you will see all the applications that are running. go to the Processes tab and it will show the cpu usage. It won'd show what is in the firefox window but you can kill the runaway firefox session and then look to see which one was closed.

Jim,

That's the process I used to determine that firefox is the culprit.
But, there's only 1 process for all firefox sessions so when I close it, they all go away.

I don't have firefox and I assumed that it acted the same way as explorer.

I have three explorer windows open and iexplore.exe shows three times in the list.

Sorry it didn't help,

Jim

That is strange BC. I run Firefox and have never seen that happen.
You and I have talked about open windows and I know we both have lots of windows open at any given time. I wonder if it's a combination effect? IE: when you have x number of firefox windows open and then open some other application could that be keying it?
The only way to tell is to keep trac of open windows when the error occurs.
If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

Unfortunately, despite how much I advocate Firefox, I have to admit it has some serious memory leaks. It is quite common for Firefox to start using 100% CPU and hundreds of MB of RAM. Often, this is the result of a poorly written extension, but there are leaks in the core application also. FF 2 is due to be released Real Soon Now™, and it supposedly has some large fixes for the memory issues.

I encounter that frequently as well and started writing about that in my first post but thought I'd cover 1 issue at a time.
About once/week, I get a "Memory Shortage" pop-up and when I look, it's by far Firefox that's using it. Yesterday, it was burning up over 250 meg. :confused2:

Only time I've experienced that was when I was infected with a worm. Is it firefox.exe eating the memory or another exe?

FireFox 2 was released this past Tuesday, and I have been using it on three different computers since then. I can definitely recomend upgrading. I have had zero crashes, and the CPU and memory usage situation seems to have been greatly improved.

I never had the CPU / Memory issues with FireFox. But I upgrade to version 2 anyyway. I really like the automatic underline of misspelled words, even when posting here on FF. :thumb:

But .... I have had firefox crash a couple of times on me. It would go into 'not respond' mode. I would have to end it then restart it.

Has anyone else tried firefox 2.0 yet?

Well, I'm up and running with my new system and I've not had any crashes yet. This is my first "off the shelf" system. I'd always built my own before. Now I just don't have time and I've found it does me no good to build a system that long outlives its usefulness. I actually have been pleasantly surprised with the HP m7680n system. My only bad issues I’ve noticed is that new systems no longer have parallel ports (and I like my HP 4000 laser printer!) and there are no open expansion slots. Oh well, I went by Office Depot and they made me a heck of a deal (I think) on a HP Laserjet 3380 all in one system. I had been using two separate scanners with my old system. I used a sheet fed Strobe Pro for most things, but still needed a flatbed for bound items. The Laserjet 3380 is not color, but it has a legal sized flatbed and a sheet fed as well. I really like being able to drop up to 50 items in the autoloader and have it scan all the sheets without me feeding them. Anyway, it was a display model and the store manager sold it to me for $500 and it has a $350 mail in rebate.

I haven’t installed FireFox yet since IE hasn’t crashed and all my info converted over. Isn’t Microsoft supposed to release a new browser any day now?

IE7 was released, I think, a couple weeks ago. I finally downloaded it the other day to see what it was like. Dumb thing doesn't even work right. Should've known being it came from Microsoft. When checking the IE newsgroups on MS's website, I'm not the only one experiencing the same problems.

I have been using Firefox since 1.0.3. When 2.0 was releaed, I had download it. I must say I like it. It doesn't really seem all that differnt from 1.5.0.7. It seems pretty stable for me. The only time FF might crash on me is when visiting a site that streams video using Windows Media Player. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. Also, for some reason, if I use Adblock Plus it causes Firefox to crash constantly. Almost to the point of being unusable. I think this problem became more prominent when 1.5 was released, but could have started before that. I don't remember.

Starting this morning, I've gone back to IE 6.0.

I'll work on the firefox when I get some time...

HEADS UP FOR ANYONE THAT USES CITRIX:
There seems to be an issue with IE 7.0 and it doesn't like to work with Citrix.
I'd turn off automatic Windows Updates if you need Citrix.

I'm hooked on FireFox.
I feel sorry for anyone having to use Citrix. We still have one Citrix server to support a couple of legacy apps ....we'll all be glad to see that server be shut down for good.

Send me the ip address and I will see what I can do

:yum: Thanks for the offer Jim ....but that would cause me MORE headaches. I meant shutdown in the sense that we no longer need those apps ....or we've found a way to rehost them on linux.

I prefer Citrix over VPN. :thumb:

With Citrix, I can establish connectivity to several systems at the same time and continue to use all my other things (internet sessions, personal e-mail...).

When I use VPN, that's it... I get to one system and everything else that's through the internet is disabled.
