Finished the bee yard today

muleman

Gone But Not Forgotten
Been working at setting up a good area for the beehives. To give them a little shelter from the cold winds in winter we decided to put them on the other side of the barnyard. It is handy enough to supplies in the barn and made it easy to electrify the fence around them. We planted 2 Japanese fusia apple trees and 2 plum trees and 3 bushes and some herbs and flowers for the bees. I dug out the clay and rocks and mixed manure and sand to put in the bottom of the hole and then worked good topsoil around the trees and plants. We just finished with the wire today and except for a personnel gate it is done. The feed bowl on the empty skid is a waterer for the bees with rocks so they can drink and climb back out of the water. We are hoping to catch a swarm next spring for a third hive. We have enough parts in the barn and you should always have spare boxes on hand.

There are a lot of berries coming real soon. That always gets them out moving and eating them. Even the Amish are saying about how many berries they are seeing growing wild. When I mowed along the lane the other day I found some red raspberries that were getting ripe and ate a few. Lots of blackberries this year also. One fella recommends putting a strip of bacon on the hot wire so the bear licks it and really gets bit.

Something must have touched the wire and made a racket as the dogs and cows are all looking that direction. Hard to tell what it may have been. Did not see any eyes when I shined the spotlight over there.

Nice set up Mule! I got tired of not knowing what's outside before I let the dogs out or before I start walking across the field (funny how a racoon can sound just like an axe murderer) and I bought one of these. Nothing hides from me now.

Dang squerly, what kind of area do you live in to require something like that?

Bob

There is something about having your own hive, getting the honey spun out and getting to take big bite out of the wax sections that fell off some of the the frames.Mmmmmmmm chewy honey!

some day i would like to do this again,i still remember dad smoking out the hive and getting a few bees inside his suit....... funny stuff when you are young:yum::yum:

good times,

IF they make enough honey this year we will takes some frames to a local guy to spin them for us. I don't really think we will get into it that big to have our own. It is already more work than the wife realized which means more work for ME! I will probably make some more boxes from lumber I have on hand but the frames it is surely easier to buy the pieces than try to make my own.

Well the fence is hot! The GSD followed the wife out to plant some borage while I was down at the neighbor lady's house. She sniffed the ribbon on the wire while standing in the wet grass and got lit up.:yum::yum: She is not supposed to be there but somebody takes her radio collar off and she crosses the wire behind the barn.

The wife said she never saw her run that fast! I have gotten nailed when we had a heavy dew and it rocks your world a little bit. My pacemaker picks it up and it shows in the download from it when I do my annual on the big machine at the hospital.

Just curious Mule, but how do you check your fence to see if it's on? Do you use the "piece of weed" method?

Naw! I am a real man and just whip out my tester and pee on it!:whistling:

Actually I have a little tester that you stick one end in the ground and touch the other lead to the wire. It lights an led when it is working. When you test it near the end of the run you know it is hitting good. I have seen it nail a bear before and he hauled ass. The smart ones try to stay low and go under the top wires as the bottom 2 are not hot on the pasture. I made them all hot around the bee yard and may run 1 or 2 more with the clips around the outside. When they get between the hot and ground ones it nail the shit out of you.
