Early Christmas or bad winter coming?

muleman

Gone But Not Forgotten
Can't believe how wild and flowery this Christmas cactus has gotten this year. Obviously it is not waiting for Santa! The tomatoes and onions are coming along nicely as well. Wife has so damn many geraniums it will be hard to make space for garden plants this spring.

They're all rough winters up here. Some are rougher than others. I'm just hoping we don't have too much of that -35F stuff. Getting to the point where that hurts the old bones. LOL!. :w00t2:

BTW, nice flowers. Think spring I guess.

We are still in the crazy swing stage here. 74 today and barely make 40 on Friday with some snow. Trying to get outside stuff done before it freezes solid. Got the suburban up on jackstands to replace a front axle bearing. The salt and sand is hard on them. When I called for parts they had a dozen in stock so it must happen a lot.:hammer:

I would assume it happens alot. We have done front wheel bearings on the Silverado at least 2-3 times already, and it needs one again. Loud as hell on the interstate. BTW it's only a 2005 with >150K miles.

I'll beat gatorboy to it... Christmas will not come early. It's always on the 25th.

Get used to that. Bearings and rotors. For loud as hell, also check for tire cupping.

My Christmas cactus are blooming as well. Never before Thanksgiving.

Strange.

Bountiful blooms though.

The red raspberry bushes are coming out also with next year,s spouts. I have some in pots destined for the ranch, but now I will have to cold frame them or the ice will kill the tenders.

weird cold winter coming.

What happened to "Global Warming? Did my best to contribute.

I kinda liked the warmer winters.

BTW Muleman is that a pineapple plant next to the tomatoes?

"BTW Muleman is that a pineapple plant next to the tomatoes?"
How the hell would I know? I just build the greenhouses and keep them heated. If it ain't something I can eat I don't pay too much attention to them. She has plants from down south and keeps them going in there. The first one I built is so full I have to move stuff just to prep it for winter. Took the ground cloth up in the garden today to spread lime and manure on it. I want to turn it under with the backhoe and till it up before winter. Chickens have been having a field day eating leftover plants and seeds in the garden.

OoooooooooooHKay.:whistling:

Just wondered as I have been growing pineapples in mine for years. I forgot to "excite " mine this year so we won't have one for the holidays from the garden.

They are rather easy to grow.

And the best you will ever eat.

Do we really want to know how you "excite" a pineapple? HELL YES! Do tell us how you do it?:whistling:

You can do it with acetalene gas. Which is how it is done commercialy

Or you can do it with ripe apples and a bag.

But don't do it too often, or in public..... people will talk.:yum:

The plant has to be at least three years old. Just put a paper bag over the growing tip and place apples in it for 3 to 4 days. The plant will bloom. If other pinapples are about, the cross fertilization will occur from flies and other insects. If nothing happens from them, the plant will self fertilize.

The flower will start as a small disk that becomes a cone and then you will see it morf into a miniature orb and cap.
Fruits take 3 to 5 months to mature depending on variety and conditions.
Can store for a month after harvesting.
I excite mine in July thru August works out for Thanksgiving to Christmas.

Propagation
Cut the top off and carterize the soft fruit under the cap. Use a well draining 10" pot. Plant in 1 part pine bark and 1 part small gravel mix with 1 part rotted compost. Or use and Orchid mix. Cover the cap and base of the green top up about 1/2"

Place in in-direct sun and never let it go dry or freeze. Add compost to keep the plant well secured in the pot.
You can buy a fresh pineapple at the store and do this quite successfully.

enjoy

I see a Christmas cactus in the first pic with geranium leaves to the left.

Second looks like a fuchsia or a trumpet type hanging plant.

Third pic- green maters on the vine.

4th and 5th.. nice hanging baskets of flowers.

6th.. geraniums, Chives? in the center black planter?
Eucalyptus-- little pot on the bottom left (I used to grow that in an herb garden to add to dried flower arrangements) WONDERFUL smell. :)

Don't see any pineapple plant there.

2nd pic is one of 2 hibiscus plants. What you took for chives is actually onions growing in the black tub. The wife has to tell me what most of them are as they are just PITA to me if they are not food. Chives are in the other greenhouse.

Second pic....Hibiscus,,,,to the right and at the bottom
