Dumbing down America

Dargo

Like a bad penny...
Not only do I think this article is disgusting Sex change for 71 year old grade school teacher , but the reporter apparently attended this confused individual's classes. What the frick is it with a sex change operation now being called "gender reassignment"?! The word "gender" has always been used for the grammatical classification of masculine, feminine, or neuter. It is NOT a word to describe your biological category! You have a sex, not a gender! Just because some uneducated people misused the word in the past and more people now follow their bad English, it is not a correct usage of the English language. When you are a teacher or reporter you should at least know your own profession! Besides it flat being disgusting to have a mentally disturbed 71 year old who has had a sex change teaching children, the reporter cannot properly communicate in the English language.

Are we heading towards teaching slang as the official language in our school systems? Personally, I would at least like my children taught the proper use of the English language at school. Reading what so called reporters now write and hearing how some teachers speak, I have to wonder who is hiring these people. If "everyone" is doing something wrong it does not make it right. I suppose since I see "everyone" turning left at red lights and driving 30 mph over the speed limit it would be right for me to do so. Man, the crap that hits our kids now! :soapbox:

How about "I'm starting a new fitness regime". Oh yeah? Like you're going to create a little army of aerobics instructors? I hate the misuse of words, which I am never guilty of doing.;)

But is it your profession or are you teaching our children the language as a representative of a school corporation?

Teachers with bad grammer is scary enough, but what about math teachers that tell students "story problems have no purpose." :pat:

What I don't understand is why bother at 71? :puke1:
Just put on a few pounds and gravity will take over: saggy chest, belly will hide outdoor plumbing......and if you pee sitting down, you can "kill two birds" and determine if the fiber has kicked in yet. :D

My wife is now a teacher after leaving a professional banking position. She teaches at the local high school and is constantly amazed at how little is expected of the students, and how little the vast majority of the parents care.

Luckily, no! It will only get worse as this generation grows up with the auto-spell check and grammar check. Less emphasis will be placed on English. I can't imagine being a poor speller back in the day when I was a COBOL programmer.

google "fitness regime" and witness all of the language atrocities!

You'd be surprised how much the vast majority do "care":
Why does my kid have homework?
Why isn't my kid getting an "A"
We don't have discipline problems at home; infact, we don't hear a thing from him all night :pat:
Why can't you make my kid learn, so he quits asking questions at home?

Yep, they sure care!

Hey, I resemble that. Everyone knows that the correct spelling of through it actually "thru".

Yeah. What are you trying to say?
Nothing in particular, but a couple notes...

As for schools, I can only speak for what I know first hand. I've attended good schools as well as bad. I went to 2 schools in K-12 and attended 4 different colleges (and taught at a 5th). There are very good institutions and very bad ones. The school my daughter attends now is a very good public school. Heck, being able to read is required in kindergarten.

I admit that my use of the English language is not perfect (or even close). I do mess it up.

As noted by Dargo, traditionally gender was used to define masculine, feminine and neuter but it has been well established in more recent years as defining the sex of a person. The use of words do change/expand over time and I would say gender is one that has expanded.

Sorry, just an attempt at humour on my part.

Man, we used to have to write out "multiply" in those programs! (well, if you didn't use a compute statement)

I agree that there's good and bad and that it's often sadly left to the parents to ensure their child is learning. My 3-year-old daughter is in a French-first-language daycare and I'm interested to see how her education will unfold.

Heh...funny thing is, the reason you had to write the work "multiply" was there was an aggressive move in the development of computer languages to achieve a "natural language" type high-level programming language. The progression went:

binary->hex->assembler->fortran, cobol, etc.

Obviously some missing there, but the point is the idea was to make it actually "easier" to program using natural language statements.

Agreed. It was certainly more readable to have a statement like:
MULTIPLY RATE BY PRINCIPAL GIVING INTEREST.

I do like the Unix scripting now - those guys had a sense of humour. Like instead of an end-if statement they have "fi" (which is if backwards). And "esac" ends the case statement.

I know, pathetic that someone could find humour in that!

So wait, are you more pissed off that a 71 year old is having a "gender reassignment" or that they are using the word "gender" instead of "sex"?
As you know, "gender reassignment" is just one of many new PC terms. Notice no more calling people "handicapped", it is "physically challenged", etc. etc.
By the way, Dargo, it's not like you to get pissed so easily. Oh, wait, what am I thinking?! :D

I used to be a woman, it's that time of the month for me. Gotta problem with that? :moon: ;)

In case you want to know, I don't like the PC term "inmates" for prisoners. They are frickin' prisioner who have committed crimes and are being held against their will. They are prisoners!

Gees, "gender reassignment"! I'm not aware of having a particular assignment for which it was my option to be reassigned. What PC kiss ass ever came up with "gender reassignment"?! Perhaps they should have their sex changed for trying to blur the sound of having your penis and balls cut off and then have a surgeon try to create a new entry hole where so they could have it put to them without the mess of using the defecation exit port.

By the way, PMS to an EMT or a PM means Pulse, Motor, and Sensation (when assessing trauma to a limb). :gay:
