Forgot to measure lengths before getting Balanced and rebuilt one is 39.5 inches the other is 40 inches . Which is front and which is back?

Since you had no replies, I'll throw a guess based on my '69. The shorter one goes to the front. But both should have 6" of slip yoke, so the 1/2" difference should be insignificant.

Measure the distance from front differential yolk to transfer case yolk. Then same for rear. Put the long shaft at the long measured distance and short drive line at the short measured distance.
