Dorset steam fair

Mith

The Eccentric Englishman
Well I made it to the fair, and had a pretty good time. Snapped some picture with my phone, though that is only partially to blame for the crappy quality, the whole place is so smokey that everything is a bit hazy anyway.......

1st off, tractors
3 individual Doe Triple D's, made from 2 tractors joined together, their steering lock was appaling (had to make a 200 point turn to make the corners)

There were lots of different vehicles made from ford tractors, I saw several forklifts, a trencher, the Triples D's, a loading bucket...... Thought this was a cool conversion

There was tractor pulling, looked like good fun. most the stuff was pretty normal pullers, the tuned engines, dual engines, V8/V10. The sled was pretty easy until they dumped water on the track, then it was very muddy.
Saw this van shell on a tractor unit chassis, it full pulled every time, even with his wife driving!

There were also a couple of tanks, one in particualr was massive, I didnt realise how big some of them were. There was also this river bridging unit, it drives into the water then unfolds to make a bridge, its also amphibious. Now this thing was huge! I had to walk back a fair few metres so I could actually see it.....

As to heavy haulage, they had a steamer pulling this artic with a loco on the back, they said it was 140 tons. Quite a load, the steamer didnt make it up the hill with that, but it was close..... It was also quite interesting seeing them load the loco onto the trailer.....

I didnt get any photos of steamers, as the side I was taking pictures on was downwind, so the smoke meant all of my shots are not good enough to look at (none of them are great).
By the time I walked the mile to get to the other side of the ring I didnt have enough battery left.

The site is about 600 acres, pretty big if you ask me, I didnt manage to see it all.

I expect IceQueen will add to this when she gets back

Some pretty neat shots anyway! :applause:

That one with the locomotive on the trailer is really neat; that would have been too cool watching the steamer try to pull it up the hill (any idea what size steamer?).

Good pics Mith. That 1st one made of two tractors looks killer. It wasn't articulating was it? Steering any other way would be tough with those huge tires.

Bob,
Tommo was unable to make it to the fair, so we didnt get the chance to meet.
I managed to find IceQueens lorry in the list of things at the show, but could I find it in real life? Nope. I probably walked past her and the Foden so many times, but I didnt manage to find her.
As meeting up with people went, it was a bit of a disaster.

Spiffy, I have no idea what size it was, but all the steamers have a rediculously small amount of horsepower. There was a tree trunk that was (judging by the men around it) about 5-6' diameter at the small end, and 8-10 feet at the big end (20'+ long), they managed to move that around.

Doc, yep, it had hydraulic rams and a tuntable in the middle to turn with, you can see the ram in the photo. I was standing in the middle of the section where I think IceQueen was supposed to be when I snapped those photos.

Something that is quite interesting, is that when the steamers arent working hard they run next to silent (its really boisy everywhere anyway, so you could hear them), the steamer drivers seemed to enjoy going up behind people and blowing the whistle to startle them. Amazing how they can run a huge engine behind someone without them noticing. It was also funny watching people being scared silly :D
