Domain Registry of America (DROA)

I suppose I can't legally call this a "scam" but when it looks like a duck etc. I have had the website catavenger.net for years and recently when it became available I got the domain of catavenger.com (I kept Catavenger.net as a subdomain.) That is why it seemed odd when I got an official looking letter telling me of a Domain "expiration." I called my current webhost and register and got a young woman who was very nice and smart. She told me that Domain Registry of America has nothing to do with their hosting. I don't know how they can legally get away with it but (DROA) sends out notices like this. It does say "this is not a bill", and some other crap that many people might not notice after they get shaken up by getting this junk.
I called DROA and told them that while it might be legal I think it's a low business practice. Here is more info. about it: http://www.ucan.org/blog/money_privacy/consumer_scam/domain_registry_of_america_scam

I get those all the time.

It's a legal scam. Their prices are so high all they have to have is a few folks fall for it for them to make money. Once you've been duped into switching to them for domain registration they have you for their high priced renewals too.

I've tried calling them to be taken off their mailing list but it does no good even when I tell them that I'm in the domain resale business too and why should I pay them many times what it's worth for renewal? :pat:

Oh Yeah, I had to read their mail very close but I knew I was using a different registrar. Their name sounds so 'official' that I gave it a good once over and figured out they were trying to trick me into renewing at a higher cost with them. Like you suggested, I'm sure quite a few folks are caught by this kind of sneaky mail. It is as close to a scam as you can get without actually being one.

Our Company has several domain names under various operations. We get these damm letters all the time.
They are hoping some low level clerk panics and authorizes a payment.

This low level clerk just hands it to the boss who explains, everytime in great detail, that it is a scam. We all get a free coffee break while she does it.:whistling:

I hope she doesn't figure that out as I'm married to her.:yum:

No clue, but I wouldn't do business with a company that tries to fool you like that. Plus I do hosting with www.DotHQ.com If you need hosting PM me for details.
