Dogs Riding in Vehicles

thcri

Gone But Not Forgotten
Our dog Annie has never been good at riding in a vehicle. She loves getting in and starts out up front with her nose high and proud. But once the vehicle starts moving then she is all over the place, does the whining thing and if you can put up with the whining/whistling for an hour she gets sick and either vomits or does the other duty all over the place.

Is there anything one can do to change this so she will ride ok?

My dogs like to ride in the car. I wont let them hang out the window or they would do that. Mine are pretty good, but they are big dogs and if they werent I could let them in the car. I dont know, sometimes I think some dogs are just they way they are, the two I have now are just normally good car dogs, I have had dogs that go nuts.

3 dogs = 1 bathroom stop in 750 miles . They just get in and pass out on the back seat .

The Cats travel great too . You would never know there was a cat in the truck .

  1. Get a pickup
  2. Put dog in back
  3. Let it whine or poop or whatever
  4. Hose it out when you are done

The vet can giv you something that will help quiet the dog down. We had b big shep that was all nerves tn a moving car and after a few times being medicated, she seemed to mello out and we never had any other problems. Might talk to a vet.

Doggie downers might calm her down enought to get used to it, or she might become a druggie, always begging for a ride (fix). Then you gotta send her to rehab....

Best thing to do is to make her feel secure. Sounds crazy, but she needs to be put in a small for her pet kennel. Especially if in your life with her you use one at home for what ever reason. My short hair pointer is fine until the truck moves, then down he goes to the floor untill the truck is going very slow. Now he is beginning to peek out then...I think he may out grow this....but in you case I think not. Letting her roam is why she works her self up in a lather...get her secure in the confines of a comfortable, but confined space, and I bet she will be fine. Skip the drugs...

Best regards, Kirk

I don't know if there is much that you can do to change her. Crating her with a familiar toy might help.

My 3 ride great in the van. They love it. All you have to do is rattle the keys and all 3 are at the back door, tails wagging. The 2 older ones are the best. One gets on the couch at the back and the other flops between the front seats or behind the driver's seat. The young one moves from side to side, looking out the windows and paying visits to the driver for petting. On long drives she'll get up on the couch with the other one and go to sleep.

We had a yellow lab and she didn't travel well.
We ended up at the vet one time and I asked him what to do,
She said to give her 1 benadryl about 1/2 before we left and it would relax her for about 6 hours.
We tried it and she that worked for us.
