Dog question

So Kaluha just has sugery today to be fixed. She has stitches. She has tried to get at them licking and such three times since she has been home. I am trying to decide if I need to stay up with her tonight to keep her from licking or will she be ok in her crate overnight. That is where she usually sleeps but I do not want any problems starting if she starts to lick and nibble at the stitches..

Thoughts/Opinons???

I think the first 48hrs are crucial to getting the healing process started after that its doubtful she will re-open the incision, sometimes a head cone works .

The vet said she didnt think she needed one after because she was leaving the incision alone.. but now she is getting more interested in it...

most all dogs lick thier wounds, check on her once or twice during the night if it will make you feel better but don't stress over it ,

Lith, the saliva of dogs have anti bacterial and germ fighting properties. Unless she actually goes to gnawing at it, I wouldn't worry too much.

You could have fashioned her an Elizabethan Collar out of a piece of poster board.

Good luck, I hope she doesn't rip them out.
She probably wouldn't.. if it began to hurt.
You could have also sprayed the area with something bitter from the pet store.

Kaluha has been spayed.
That's a good thing.
There are too many unwanted pets needing homes and love the way it is.

I'll bet you if you watch her close, she may lick the stitches alot, but unless they are pinching her I bet she won't 'dig' at them.

She looks like a fine pup! And now we know she's got good masters!!!

So update- Kaluha spent her first night outside her crate. She layed on the floor beside the bed for like 3 hours. Then I got up and nearly tripped over her to get to the bathroom.. She started licking herself and was trying to get at the stitches so we came out to the couch and both fell back asleep till the alarm pissed me off.

Last night she tried some dry dog food after the vet said it was ok and puked a massive amount back up. So we went back to water. Today my mom came and spent the day with her. She tried dry food again and puked..

So I had my sweet rusty pick up some extra lean ground beef and rice. I fed it to her VERY slowly. So far so good and its been 2 hours.. She is back playing with her toy from mom but still stays close. I will likely sleep with her on the couch tonight. I enjoy the cuddle ( mostly because she can't dutch oven me)...ROFL

Lith,

thats nice to hear, it's also interesting to hear about Sweet Rusty.:w00t2:

good dog, nice thoughtful parents

Hey Lith

How is the dog ?

She is doing good. Had to make her beef and rice because she kept throwing up her dry kibble. She is playing with her toys now and actually stays out of her crate all the time. Even over night- she just sleeps on my side of the bed on the floor. She has done really well with that! I am surprised. Thanks for asking!
