Dog Aspirin?

Gerard

"You have to"
Have you ever given your dog human aspirin? The dog isle has the same 81mg dose but cost much more. Is there a difference?

Yes but you can't give them as much even though the mg's are the same. Maybe Junkman can chime in and give you some real advice.

Thanks for responding "T". My wife said that our Vet said 81mg human was okay but I don't think so. Hope he does chime in.

It depends on the size of the dog. You have to be careful about the dosage.

Also, buffered aspirin will probably pass through the dog because their GI tract is shorter. You can cut the buffered aspirin in half.

My old big dog has been getting half to a whole aspirin (200mg) a day for quite a while now. It really seems to help him more than anything else. But he also has cancer so it isn't really about prolonging his life as much as quality of life at this point. He turns 13 on Monday and has had a long enough life. I just want his last days to be as "happy" as can be.

You really need to run it by your vet before doing it.

Thanks PB. He's an American Eskimo around 31 lbs. and his 12th B'day is next Tuesday. I'll double check with our vet tomorrow as you stated just to be sure. Here's a photo.

I was told by my vet never to give dogs aspirin, but rather 1/2 of a children's Tylenol tablet, q4h.
This was for dachshunds, 1/2 was safe for a 5-7 lb doggie.
Gretchen did something to one of her hind legs last year jumping off the sofa, and she hobbled around holding it up.
The good Dr. Doolittle prescribed as stated above, plus told me to fill the bath tub with warm water and let her "swim" with my hand supporting her tummy.

3 days later she was back to normal.. jumping and running around like a maniac again.

We have had several dogs, and have gone to several different vets, and they all have recommended aspirin for pain. The rule of thumb is 10mg per 10lbs, no more than 2 times a day and not for an extended period of time. Coated aspirin is the best to give, and with some food. There is the possibility of the same symptons a human would have, stomach upset, ulcers etc..

THANKS FOR POSTING as I used this info when asking the vet. You got good info.
I just called the vet and she said that HALF an 81mg aspirin for our 31lb dog would be okay. Remember though, that an individual dogs health also comes into question as well, though, as a rule the 10 per 10 ratio is good and safe.

The old belief was that aspirin was OK for dogs. Then they changed that belief to giving half doses to dogs. The latest research shows that dogs stomachs don't tolerate aspirin very well, and the vets that are up to date on the research are no longer recommending aspirin at all for dogs. Rimadyl is a veterinary prescription drug that helps some dogs, but not all dogs tolerate the drug well. If you want, read this about pain drugs for dogs... There is no easy answer for all dogs. Just be cautious and keep a close eye on the animal whenever you are administering any new product.

Thanks for the info and link Junk. Though remember, that yesterday butter was no good for you and today it's the next best thing to sliced bread. Not to doubt what your saying, but....

our vet has cautioned against the use of aspirin in dogs for many years. When my old Siberian Husky was still around, he had a prescription for Etodolac -- which is also available for humans, and is apparently related to ibuprofen, etc... without being hard on stomachs.

good luck!

Our 15 year old dog has been taking Rimadyl for about a year, half a tablet per day, and it seems to help with her arthritis.
