Does anyone know how to stop Win 8 from going into 'Full Screen' mode?

Dargo

Like a bad penny...
I needn't rehash how much I despise Windows 8. However, since I couldn't even get $300 out of a $1200 Lenovo laptop that came handicapped with Windows 8 on it, I refuse to just throw away $1200 because Microsoft rendered the laptop virtually worthless. I've wasted the last 2 hours trying to look up how to turn off the "automatic" full screen mode that literally makes me press F11 about every 2 minutes. Using Google all I found was a few hundred complaints from others ticked about the same issue.

So, I then spent another hour trying to get a Microsoft tech on the phone who could tell me how to stop my computer going to "full screen mode" seemingly at random forcing me to wear out the F11 key. Much to my shock and dismay, the Microsoft tech told me that me, as the end user, could not disable a "key feature" of Windows 8". WTF?! As politely as possible, I tried my best to explain to the lady that I considered it a flaw that, for the most part, makes my laptop unusable. Still, she told me that "key feature" is part of Windows 8 and I could not 'turn off' part of the OS.

I must have just not explained what I wanted properly because I'm clearly NOT the only person totally annoyed by that "feature" of Windows 8 multitasking ability. Anyone? Please. I cannot imagine Windows 8 is that worthless. I realize I really dislike the OS, but it's shit like this simple thing that should easily be turned off that makes me hate Microsoft even more. Again, please, could someone tell me how to turn off this extremely annoying 'feature'? I'm trying my best to use this Windows 8 computer just to browse the internet and use email. I honestly cannot believe it really is this bad.

Thank you in advance for someone who can tell me how to shut off this 'feature' with just a few keystrokes.

Uh, its obvious. Buy an Apple!

Well, if this is as good as it gets for Microsoft, I pity anyone who owns some of their stock! I clicked the "Music" tab....45 minutes ago and it's still sitting there making little circles as it apparently tries to do something.

After talking to Microsoft's tech support and spending about 4 more hours today trying to use Windows 8, I've changed my opinion on Microsoft 8. I used to think it sucked. Now I know it's pure shit and based on Google searches on how to get it to work, it appears that about 99% of people on the internet feel the same way. :hammer::hammer:

Melen is using it at Wake Forest (they supply computers to the students) and she HATES it too.

I gave up on windows stuf...some time ago and went to apple....costs more up frount but as time passes I grow more and more glad I went to apple.......Ikeep the last apple till it wouldnt take the new soft ware...and then got another..lap top this time and I realy enjoy it......Wish I had the magic answer for ya Dargo......got a feeling it would be worth a small fortion!!!!!!! Good luck ..hope ya find a cure!!!!!!!!!

Aargh!!! I called support again because basically nothing works. There is NO music on the computer (it's never been used) and it sat for over an hour trying to open my huge library of songs. Clearly a crash (I haven't seen even once on any of my Mac machines). So, I call support again. After about a half an hour I get someone who tells me I need to open the "store" tab and do updates.

You guessed, it just sits there and crashes. I'm told I need to restore my OS because I've apparently installed something that has corrupted my OS. That's a real problem because the only disc that has ever been in this computer is MS Office I bought from MS directly! I humor them and fucking re-install the OS fresh. It still just crashes. Tech support says they will get back with me tomorrow. I'm not sure the system will be in one piece by then. FU Microsoft. I'm finished with you for life!

:whistling:Do ya think maby Sebyous SP....had any thing to do with picking folks at microsoft?????:yum: sounds a little like the health care dot gov!!!!!!!!! come to think ov it isnt microsoft a n O-slimmy suporter???

I've learned with Microsoft always avoid new OS until you know about them for sure. Now my office Lenovo came with Vista which I promoptly replaced with Window XP and since with Windows 7. My laptop came with Window 8 but again I installed Windows 7. Now Windows 9 is due out later this year and I won't go to it until I see the results of the first service patch.

The first service patch sucks. Plain and simple. I shoulda left mine at windows 8 instead of upgrading to 8.1. I haven't had issues like Dargo but my freakin wifi keeps disconnecting every 20 mins or so since I did the upgrade. I'm thinking MS dropped the ball with this whole 8/8.1 system and shoulda invested more money into developing it rather than promoting it.

Can you buy Windows 7 and install that on the computer?

I bought up a licensed copy of Windows 7 when it was still available. Not sure if you can still buy it any more. If you have a licensed copy from MS it will install but you will need to call MS to get it approved. Now possibly a copy that came with a computer but in most cases the copy is OEM and MS won't honor it if being installed on another machine.

I don't know. As Joe mentioned, doing so may not be so easy. However, after this unmitigated disaster of Windows 8 and Microsoft's insistence on spending all their cash on advertising rather than fixing a completely broken and unusable OS, I have now added Microsoft to GM as companies who will never get another dollar from me buying one of their new products. Both companies operated with reckless abandon and both showed absolutely no regard to the end user of their product or those who invested in their companies.

What is interesting is that about 20 years ago I wondered WHY Apple was even still in business when they had extremely expensive machines that literally had almost no software available for them and there was basically no ability for the end user to upgrade their machines like one could with a PC. Now I can picture Microsoft with one tiny isle in computer stores with almost no sales and Mac machines dominating the market. It seems that GM and Microsoft both got the headstrong impression that THEY directed what people wanted and what people could buy and both totally disregarded quality and customer support. Apple has always had superior customer support and obviously responds to the desires and wants of customers. History has shown that superior customer support and developing what customers want while maintaining high quality has won out.

GOD!!!! To College boys crack me up ! It is so simple to fix that problem . Just take a blank piece of paper and Scotch tape it over half the screen .Problem solved !!

I been doing that for years on my Check Engine light in the car !!!DUH !!!

You laugh, but when I was helping my grandmother out after my grandfather passed at age 94, I literally found that my grandfather had placed a piece of black electrical tape over the flashing 12:00 on their VCR (they never got a DVD player). :thumb:

Heck...I did that with my last chevy when the o2 sensors kept setting off the check engine light.:whistling:

Back to the thread...not entirely sure about windows 8 at this point. I still like the concept and 8.1 did fix a few of the annoyances I found with 8 but created a whole new set of problems. I do beleive my sons grade 4 class was working last week to write the software used by microsoft in this mix up.

I cannot "upgrade" to 8.1 because my version of 8.0 came so screwed up from Lenovo that it cannot do any of the "updates". If ALL of the "updates" are not done, Windows 8 will not allow a user to "upgrade" to 8.1 per Microsoft's tech support person. :hammer::hammer::hammer:
