The debate is coming to a head this next US Supreme Court session. The case is Gonzales v. Oregon, 04-623. The interesting thing about this case is that it is the Federal Government trying to take away States rights. The present administration is claiming to want to put things back to the States right to decided. The conflict comes as a result of the religious beliefs of the President vs. what the people of Oregon voted they wanted.
