DMC 3700 restore or not

Truffle Hunter

New member
Hello, new to Forums, have read almost every snowcat posting. Thought this might be the best place for opinions on this DMC 3700.
I was looking for a new project and thought a snowcat would be fun. Have come across this unfinished project that I could handle.
Don't know if there is any value in a restored 3700. After an inspection and from reading posts here, some observations.
The previous owner made a new cab, wider to seat 2,it needs doors pass and wiring insulation etc. The sprockets need recovered as wells the front
urethane wheels. Bogies are so so, some good some no good. The Allis hasn't been run in a while. The drive train is complete with a 6 way blade.
Any thoughts?

From you asking about value... If you are thinking about making money "flipping it". The lottery has a better return rate. If you're thinking about a fun cat and using it for a while then that's different. My opinion only.

If you can handle it, go for it. The allis is a simple engine. Most are snowcat versions are intercooled.

Most died from being over revved all night at the hands of operators who didnt care.

Tracks and idlers are the easy large work items.

Pumps and hyd motors are simpleish.

They are heavy and strong.

I cant move them around easily so i stay away from them. I buy them if they are cheap as they are great parts pigs.

Ive had two. I like them.

As a data point for your consideration, there is a highly customized Thiokol 3700 listed for sale as a consignment machine on Snotrans' website. That same machine was listed on ksl.com for a year (plus or minus) and didn't sell. I think they started asking $60K and the price dropped from there. I don't recall what the last price was but I think it was below $50K. It looks to be very well done, but it's 12' wide and undoubtedly very heavy.

Consignment: Custom restored 1982 Thiokol 3700 Hydromaster, (12 ft wide machine), 8-man cab with addition outside seating, 5990 hours, 426 CID, 200 HP, Allis Chalmers turbo charged diesel engine, inner cooled, hydrostatic transmission and steering, pintle hitch, multi-disk brakes, new tracks with aluminum wheels and foam filled tires.
Snowcat has been garaged and comes with a blade but hydraulics have been removed.
A must see to appreciate! Machine located in Utah. Price on request.
