Disney at Christmas time 2008

Well I will NEVER go back to Disney during Christmas break again!!!

We went to see the mouse and went down after Christmas and stayed through the New Years week. This was probably our 10th trip down there as a family. But every other trip we made to pay homage to the mouse was made in mid-October or mid-January, while kids were safely back in school (we pulled Melen out of school for the prior trips) and we didn't have any of the massive crowds to deal with.

The day we went to Sea World they had 'record' crowds. The day we went to the Magic Kingdom was also a 'record' crowd day. Oh so much fun.

To make matters worse, we took along my sister in law for this trip and the day before we left for Florida she fell down in the snow and broke her foot. She we had to push her around the parks in a wheel chair  Talk about a PITA, compounded by the crowds, it was so much fun :ermm:

When Anita was visiting us over Thanksgiving we stressed to her that this is one place she should not have missed. Unfortunately while she spent a couple weeks in Florida, she did not have time to go to Disney, at that would have been a perfect time to go, with very small crowds. So these photos are for all you Disney fans, and for Anita to see what she missed.

I will say that New Years day we spent the day in Epcot and the crowds were down 50% of the other days.

This was also the first year we stayed "off property" and that is something I will never do again. While the costs off property are probably 60% lower than staying in the Disney complex, it just didn't seem worth it. And saying that says a lot because we had a beautiful 3 bedroom townhouse, with private pool, in a gated community literally a couple minutes from the main gate to Disney and even that was not worth it compared to staying on property. There are simply too many advantages to staying on the Disney property and most of them are related to saving time, effort and grief. Anyway, we learned.

Good pics Bob. I haven't been to Disney World for 10+ years, but it doesn't seem to change. No matter when I went (Disney World or Disney Land in LA) it was crowded. I didn't think they had a down time.
I've seen the commercials about: Now your kids are grown so go to Disney World to bring out the kid in you. Not this guy. :D It was fun with the kids but enough is enough.

Were you allowed to carry in Disney?

You should have known that was a bad time to go -- June thru Labor Day is another horrible time.

I'm taking the family their late September, when school is back in session and crowds are light. We will also be staying on the grounds, but have yet to decide where yet.

We were there about ten years ago during Thanksgiving. It was pretty crowded then too.

Were you allowed to carry in Disney?
I did not. But if you carry concealed there is nothing that would stop you, no metal detectors, or pat downs at the doors/gates, etc.

We will also be staying on the grounds, but have yet to decide where yet.
We love The Boardwalk. You have to take a shuttle to the Magic Kingdom but you can walk to Epcot (literally a 2 or 3 minute walk) via the "International Gateway" and you can hop on a boat at the dock for a direct passage to the Hollywood Park (formerly called MGM studios park). Directly across the little pond from the Boardwalk is the Yacht Club and the Beach Club complex, I've never stayed in those, they are supposed to be a bit downscale from the Boardwalk but still very nice. Stay at one and you can use the facilities of all 3 because the pond is small and has a walking path around it. Also, adjacent to the same pond are the Swan and the Dolphin, neither as as kid friendly and often used for business meetings, etc. But again right there. So on 1 pond are 5 hotels, all walking access to Epcot and direct boat access to Hollywood via a very quick boat ride.

Not much character, but still fun to stay in, the Contemporary is very nice. With the tram running through it and the huge atrium its a place kids seem to like. Even if you don't stay there, if you want a nice dinner then you should book a reservation (months in advance) for a table that overlooks the Magic Kingdom. Check the schedules and find out what time the fireworks are for the night you want to book the dinner and get your reservation for about 30 to 45 minutes prior to the start of the fireworks. Make sure you book a window seat! Great dinner and show. If you like fireworks.

If you have a girl then get reservations for a meal inside Cinderella's Castle, again months in advance. Food is OK, not great. But your daughter will get to eat in the castle dining room and Cinderella and some other characters are usually on hand for many of the meals to visit the table.

Bob S. and family: Spent Christmas at a crowded DisneyWorld.

K and family: Spent Christmas at a crowded farmhouse in Iowa with the in-laws.

A crowded Disney @ Christmas doesn't sound bad to me!!
