Diesel Snow Trac

Does anyone here have any ideas about putting a small perkins or Caterpillar diesel in a snowtrac ? like maybe a 3024 or maybe a 3024c ? has anyone tried this swap ? thanks

Why not use a VW diesel? Should be a bolt in, easily adapted to existing transmission and variator. Plus liquid cooling for adequate heat...

the industrial diesels are going to be way too heavy the vw turbo diesel is your only real option i am thinking about a hydrostatic trive full rubber track kubota powered rig for cossing tundra in the summer but i will expect it to be too heavy for good snow opps with ut a super wide track like asnow master

OK, what about the vw diesel ? new or old ? or what about a kubota diesel ? you guys seem so have more knowledge than I, just wondering if it would be a good idea, LOL

I would suggest and early 1.6L diesel. No computers, and they will run on almost any liquid that burns. The turbo version would be awesome, but they are harder to find and much more $$$.

There was a 1.9L engine imported to Canada both with and without a turbo. Not the TDi 1.9L, that is a very computerized motor...

The OEM aircooled VW motor is what, 40hp?

A non turbo 1.6 diesel is 42, but with a much, much better torque curve, far better fuel efficiency and liquid cooling. 1.6L turbo is about 60 hp. The 1.9s are 50/75 hp I believe.

Plus they can be bolted directly to the existing drive train.

you can over 100hp out of the older vw turbo diesels. there is a company in ontario,"canada that is" that builds a beefed up injection pump and with the boost turned up a bit there you go. They put one in a suzuki on Xtreme 4x4 on Spike Tv a while ago

I'll confess right up front I've never seen a Snow Trac in person and am generally clueless on anything Volkswagen.

But engine swaps are a bunch of work....

My understanding is the VW engine in a Snow Trac is a flat four, meaning two cylinders on each and the cylinders are horizontally opposed. But the VW 1.9 Diesel is an inline 4 cylinder and it's oriented vertically.

Is there that much room in a Snow Trac's engine compartment to accommodate the Diesel engine, and the radiator?

power isn't everything weight and balance means alot so watch your weighti kind of like the idea of using bobcat drivetrain with a kubota diesel mounted as far to the rear of the engine bay as i could get it powder preformance would kind of suck but it would be a cool tundra runner

JimVT,

Thanks for the links. They look pretty darn cool. Kind of "shoe-horned in" but cool none-the-less. I wonder what the performance difference is?

Don,

My Bobcat 763 has a Kubota Diesel engine. IIRC it's 46 HP.

My impression is the Snow Tracs are pretty fast, at least compared to Tuckers. How would the Bobcat engine and drivetrain affect the speed?

i wouldn't expect it to top out much more than a bobcat with out some gearing changes the diesel hydro conversion would be geared aroun summer usage where i need to ford creeks and run accross tundra and boggs. you have no understanding of tundra until you have tryed to walk accross it or drive a quad on it top speed if conditions are good will only be about 10 mph the cat or body can't take much more abuse than that
