Dexter cattle

FrancSevin

Proudly Deplorable
I'm looking for someone near Springfield MO who sells Dexter calves this coming spring. Need to add two heifers to the herd I will be sharing with my neighbor.

He now has seven but I want to bring in different gene pools. His bull is looking a bit too fondly at the daughters.

My wife won't let me have any cattle. I'd love a couple low line cattle, maybe some of the more hardy Scottish long hairs or something.

Sorry I can't help you out with any info. We used to go down to Boonville, a small town west of Jeff City, to visit my wife's inlaws but I didn't know anyone down there who had cattle, let alone Dexters.

As I understand the breed, Dexters are long haired Scottish dual purpose cattle.
They seem to do well on our rank grass pastures and weeds here in Douglas CO MO. Very strong flavored flesh and medium milk production.

Low maintanence. Milk 'em or don't. Great for lazy old farts who can't get out o' bed come morning.

I have become city slicker soft so the 5:00 AM and PM milking thingy is not gonna work like it did when I was a country kid.

Nope, Dexters are short haired Irish cattle. They are dual purpose but sometimes are considered as triple purpose as they were used as draft animals as well.

It's been a long time since I did any research on Dexters but way back then in the UK they had the reputation of being somewhat "unpredictable" which means that the little buggers could turn on you in an instant. I don't know if that is still the case or if it has been pretty much bred out of them.

Those miniature breeds, like the Dexters, are very interesting if you want some cattle on small acreage and don't want your freezer filled with 600 pounds of burger meat.

You are right, of course. My memory failed me.

Thanks for the corrections. The knowledge I have about the Dexter breed is what I got from my neighbor over the last 2 years. That and his herd wanders onto my place from time to time. Quite gentle actually. Even the bull.

Except when challenged. A bull, twice his size came on the pasture last summer. It's owner almost had to put what was left of him down. The little Dexter guy just snorted and went on.

Meat is stronger in flavor and very lean. Not marbled or as tender as Black Angus. But tasty.

BTW, both the bulls and the cows have horns. There is no polled breed. And, they are not miniature just smaller. Easily coming up over 4 feet at the shoulder. At least the ones eating my front lawn are.

About 750 pounds on the hoof.

Thanks for the info.

There is a lot on the internet but not all of it is in agreement. I just want to purchase from someone who has real experience with the breed.
