Dethatchers, need some real advice here

I am wanting to dethatch the lawn this year for the first time and try to really get some grass growing on it. I dont do leaves well, so it is pretty much packed.

Which is the best method you guys and gals have found to get down to the dirt so to say. I am looking at the pull behind kind with a couple of cinder blocks. I also considering the blades for the bota, but not really sure if they make a set.

Help, and thank you in advance.

The pull behind kind collect a lot of crud and clog up in a hurry.

If you can get the blades for the bota that might work.

If you are re-seeding then you should consider a pull behind aerator and use that to tear the crap out of the lawn. It will expose lots of dirt for the seed.

Why not go to the rental place and rent a power dethatcher like the lawn services use?

Thanks guys, I just want to tear the thatch out.

Bob I would do that, but there are so many roots at ground level I am worried about killing the maple tree that produces all the leaves. What I would love to have is the front brush for the bota.

if I can get used to cleaning out the tines, I can get the aerator also, and the farm store has one that aerates and sows at the same time.

Any one ever used one of the tine ones.................

thanks

Don't get the spike aerator/fertilizer combo one. It doesn't do much. Spike aeration needs real spikes. and the spreader isn't very good.

You will hate your tow behind thatcher if you have leaves and sticks on the ground. It only works well with bare grass (with thatch).

The leaves are pretty much the thatch, I was hoping to pull them up with it. All of the yard needs this done, and most of it is not leave covered.

You may want to rent a powered one first. The tow behinds are really geared for "maintenance" work and not heavy redo projects.
