Alaska dentist uses crown, poster putty and yellow highlighter to fix bald eagle's broken beak
Feb 7 07:52 PM US/Eastern

THE CANADIAN PRESS ANCHORAGE, Alaska - An Alaska dentist has given a bald eagle a unique beak - using a temporary crown, sticky poster putty and yellow highlighter.

The bird was found in December with severe damage to its beak, apparently from fishing line that wrapped around it and started cutting into it.

Cindy Palmatier at the Bird Treatment and Learning Center says staff there decided to turn to dentist Kirk Johnson, who thought of patching up the beak with the same material used to make temporary crowns for people, according to KTUU-TV.

The "crown" is being held on with poster putty, and Johnson colored it in using highlighter to give it a yellow tint.

The bird centre says the eagle is doing just fine but won't be able to return to the wild.

When I saw that report on the news I thought it was some kind of joke.

First of all, there is no way that crap will hold in the wild for ten minutes.

Second of all, though that guy looked like he was having fun coloring, the stench from those

pens never goes away and if humans can smell it with our unsensitive sense of

smell, it would be the only thing the eagle will ever smell again for as long as

it lives which, if they released it into the wild, will be about half an hour.

that story has been airing on the news for several months and that bird will neverbe released in to the wild it will stay at a shelter for injured birds o fort richardson where there are several other crippled eagles and some under giong physical theropy so they can be released.

You might actually try reading it . Before stating your facts . I Guess you would have had a better idea . :glare:

Man you sure are negative! First off Mr. Expert......... The Eagle will not be released back into the wild. If had bothered to actually read the few lines above you would have seen that. Second Mr. grumpy I doubt that the "pens" will off gas for all eternity. In fact maybe a few weeks at the most. Seems to me you just dont like it when humans actually help a fallen Eagle. Maybe you just dont like the Eagle because its the symbol of this great Nation? :hammer:

Make up your mind, am I Mister Negative, Mister Grumpy, or Mister Expert?

There are two things about this story that piss me off, neither of which

have to do with the eagle being the national bird :glare:

First, all that damage was done by some irresponsible polluter. The eagle

in this story is just the beginning. Birds and aquatic animals all over the place

are getting trapped in shit lazy "outdoorsmen" carelessly toss away.

Second, smearing those overpowering chemicals on an eagles beak is an affront to the

bird. Like putting a sweater on a dog. It was for the entertainment of

the vet, not anything to help the eagle.

As an avid hunter and fisherman I have to ask have you ever had a fish break your line? How do you know so much about the smell of hi-liters? Has the smell gone to your head? It might help explain some of your negativity toward everything. Have you ever even seen an eagle? Have you made a donation to help save eagles? I have right there on Ft. Richardson. They have a very nice program to help injured birds live out their life with some assistance from man. Please do tell us of your vast experience with helping wildlife or any injured animal. I am always looking to learn.

Terrific story. I'm glad they could help the bird, even if it won't be released back into the wild.

Where did I say that helping eagles bothered me? No where? Right!

Coloring the eagles beak with a highliter was dumb. Its like a Bellevue

woman who won't leave her house if her bag doesn't match her shoes.

Period. End of story.

Weak ass response to 5 questions I asked you. About what I expected from one who runs off about things they know nothing about. Here is another one for you. Have you ever helped an injured animal?

I agree. Its pretty amazing what can be done to help injured animals. Although I have to agree with Treefriend that the "highlighter" coloring of the beak seems a bit silly. Even with the bird kept in a sanctuary, what difference does it make if the beak is the proper color? I mean seriously what were they thinking with the highlighter? And won't it simply fade its color too . . . I think they are water based markers!!!

With all due respect B_Skurka , Allthough I,m certainlly not an expert on most if any topics . I would have to say it was for good reason , I dont think it was merelly a cosmetic thing for effects but More then likelly since birds of prey have such eyesight we cant even comprehend , I,m guessing it was to help the eagle not to be endangering itself any further if it seen something that didn,t look natural to it thats right if plain view .

Problly dont make sence , but some things dont & its only my opinion .

Actually Cowboy that does make allot of sense. Treefriend is without a doubt a radical left winged eco terrorist. I bet he even belongs to that terrorist orginization PETA and most likely ELF as well. Hes a nut job that thinks we humans should just stay in our homes and never venture into the great outdoors. Except of course they are above us "low lifes" and can do as they tell other do not! I know his type. So smart there stupid. I can even tell you who he voted for in the last elections. YUP his Lord and Savior, Obama. He even proudley drives around in his little VW Bus painted with little flowers and such spewing oil form his leaky engine. On the back is his Obama sticker... YUP. But what he could never admit to or even see is the fact that OBAMA stands for One Big Ass Mistake America. I bet he even lives in or near Seattle!
