Dehydrated Yellow Lab

thcri

Gone But Not Forgotten
Every morning I empty and refill a 5 quart ice cream pail full of water for our 9 year old female yellow lab. For about the last 2 months I noticed she has not been drinking much of the water out of it. However if she goes outside which she does everyday she goes right to the water that we have in a bucket out in the garage. This water typically is dirty and we use for washing our feet and other things. The water can be days old. Again I have not thinking much about it but she had a physical today and the Vet said the dog is dehydrated. So why does she drink the water out in the garage that she can not get to for the majority of the day which typically is warm and old. The water in the house is fresh, typically cold as it is well water and she does not touch it?

Maybe she doesn't like the ice cream pail. Tried another container? Next, maybe there's something in your well water that she's detecting and it's something that settles out after a couple of days in the bucket. Will she go for bottled water?

My dogs are the same way. They would rather have dirty old water than fresh water.

Could your dog have diabetes or some form of Kidney issues? Did the vet do a blood test?

About every 4 or 5 months I give her a new ice cream pail as they seem to get slimy even after washing them out. So I just give her a new one and throw the old one away. She loves the water out of the garden hose which the bucket in the garage gets filled from a hose. I will find a new type of container and try that.

Yes they did blood work and found nothing wrong there.

What about the changing of colour of the bucket. Some animals attract to some colours.
But I have no idea about the attraction of colors with animals.
So consult a VET and try.

Hey, NATO123 is back!

I hope everything is still going well and peaceful in Sri Lanka?

Hema,

I will get one of different color. In fact maybe I could bring the green one out from the garage and try that one. Good idea.

Timba has stainless steel drinking bowls, but given the chance will drink out of my water feature of a plastic bucket under the rainwater barrel. She also likes to drink the water that is freshly poured from the tap. Try refilling the container and calling the dog to it, it might work.

Welcome back Hema -- I was thinking about you a couple weeks ago when I heard the Tamil Tigers finally gave up. Hopefully this means things have calmed down a bit in your country.

Is your indoor water softened and the hose water unsoftened?

Indoor except for the kitchen sink is softened. The outdoor is unsoftened except for in the garage which is softened for washing cars. The water that she likes to drink is from the garage which is softened.

I tried a new pail next to the old one today. Different color and I used hard water and she drank the majority of it and has not touched the old pail. So she will now be getting hard water in a new container. Funny how in the past I did change new containers now and then.

I think it's just a dog being a dog.

Ours would much rather drink from the stainless steel basin outside where they are fed than from their water dispenser inside. Same water. We've one, that after not touching it for nine years, has discovered the joys of drinking from the toilet bowl. Now I have to make sure that the cover is down on every toilet in the house ... after nine years!!!! I thought that I had her better trained than that. Mind you, it took my wife years to train me to put the seat down so the dog is probably no worse than I am. :yum:
