Data transfer issues between computers

I am giving Melen my laptop computer to take to college this summer.

Prior to doing that, I did a full back up of my computer/data/files/applications/etc onto an external hard drive. Then I set up a second user profile on my laptop.

I then did a full back up of Melen's desktop computer to a different external hard drive. I think uploaded all of Melen's settings/programs/data/etc into the second user profile that resides on my laptop.

It worked perfectly. Upon start up of the laptop Melen can 'log in' as me, or as herself. If she logs in as herself then all of her data is there, all her programs are there, etc. If I log in then all my stuff is there. She can now take it to college, keep it logged in under her info and everything will be great.

BUT THEN . . .

I tried to back up my old desktop with my laptop computer's data/files/software/etc that was on the back up hard drive. It didn't work.

My laptop has the most current Mac OS running on it. My old desktop is 2 Mac OS versions behind. I thought that the back up drive would update the old OS to the new OS. But now I am wondering if I need to upgrade my old OS to the new OS to get the back-up to work.

Has anyone done this? Or perhaps have any insight?

My thought would be the backup will only install on a similar O/S as was used to build it. I know a lot of my favorite utilities will not run on Win7. They are designed for XP

That is kinda what I'm thinking.

Melen's stuff went onto my laptop because she had an older OS and my laptop had the newer OS so the newer OS allowed it.

But when I tried to put the newer OS onto another computer with an older OS it didn't transfer.

I guess I will break down and pay for the OS upgrade to the newer version for the older desktop, then try to migrate the data from the back up drive after I have the older desktop computer updated. Being a cheap bastard I was hoping to save a few bucks, guess I better dust off the cobwebs and crack open my wallet.
