cutting torch problem

I have a Harris Model 85 cutting torch. Recently it has started to backfire through the tip. I have changed the tip to a new one and also have refilled my bottles.

It still backfires. If i cut in a little more oxygen from the trigger it will stop. But that is not right.

Is there something else I should look at or is it time to send it in for a rebuild? Can it be rebuilt at home? Any good parts sources?

Normally if you get backfires, it is because you don't have enough ox/ac mix coming out and the flame jumps back into the tip. You may need to get a smaller tip, there are assorted tips for different jobs. The tips do wear out also and a new tip is only a few dollars, OK maybe twenty or thirty... But that is part of using the equipment.

Also, you may have some bad "O-rings" in the tip and need replacing and it lets the ox/ac mix before the tip's end down below where it mounts to the torch head.

When you set the torch up, what is the gas settings (pressures). I normally have my Acetylene set at about ten PSI and the OXG. set at about 40 PSI. You need to set the cutting tip up with a solid flame that "Hisses", there should be about a 1/4" of the bright blue flame and the lighter blue tail out about six to eight inches or so.

Many people have a big torch head, and try to use it on a lower flame and that causes it to "Pop" all the time, turn the acetylene up and then add Ox until the popping stops, or get a smaller tip.

I had the torch rebuilt. They found a bad o-ring on the lever for the blow out oxygen. That was replaced as well as all the others. They cleand the entire head and hadle up. It looks like new and it was only about $25.00.

My Craftsman set of torches have been doing the same thing for years . I had then rebuilt with no change in the back fire problem . Now I'll go look at the o rings . THanks !!!!!
