Cub Cadet Chainsaws

any good? who makes 'em?

I'm just curious cause I just bought one on ebay. yeah, I know, I should ask this before I buy, but 30 minutes ago I got back from a disapointing firewood hunt with a dead saw. So I jumped on ebay looking for a deal on a Stihl or Husky and found this CC auction ending soon. payed less than a Poulan would cost at Wally World.

You probably got a decent deal, but I'm no longer a fan of Cub Cadet. I own one of their garden tractors but it was made before MTD purchased Cub. I do have a MTD made Troy Bilt pole saw and it works great but vibrates a heck of a lot more than my Stihl chainsaw. In the MTD line of brands, Cub Cadet is their premium brand, I think Troy Bilt is their #2 brand, followed by Yardman, followed by MTD/Yard Machines. My observation is that they are not quite as smooth running, not quite as trouble free as the premium brands, but they are lower priced and can be a value.

Thanks Bob, I'll let you all know how it turns out. checked around and folks say it compares to a 353 husky??? dont have specs on the 353 but they say it'll "whoop a 350 husky". 350 husky runs around 340 bux. I may have done ok on this @ $178 delivered.

thanks again, Eric

FYI its a model CS-5220

Edit: note to self, pay attention to whos logged in when you post... Yes, Jen is my wife:5boobs:

For $178, even it if is not as smooth as a Stihl, it is only half the price of a typical Stihl so I'd say you probably will be happy with it. I have Rhematoid Arthritis and vibration really bothers me, after using any power yard tool I am sore as all heck. So for me, even though I don't use my tools like a landscaper or a lumberjack, I pay oftem pay a little extra to get a smoother running tool. I've got a nice lightweight Echo weedwacker that is very smooth, and like I wrote before I have a Stihl chainsaw that is also smooth. My Troy Bilt pole saw vibrates worse than either of those, but I don't use it for extended periods of time so it is pretty easy to tolerate.

If not for the problem with Rheumatoid Arthritis, I would opt for less expensive tools more often than I do.

OK, I needed to get on my woodcutting, and my saw had not shown up, so I tinker with my Poulan and get it running. OK, buck up about 1/2 cord and it stars running crappy again, no power, barely runs. I had been questioning if I really needed the new saw just before the holidays...now I'm wishing I had the new one...throw junk saw on tailgate and drink a beer ...Toyota Tacoma comes up the driveway...Hmmm, who's that, maybe one of the kids' friends' mom. Lady gets out, she's about 125' from me and starts yelling something about how she got a "package" thats for us... ooh, ooh...is it a chainsaw? She doesn't know what it is. I'm expecting a couple different things to show up, so it could be toys for the kids' Christmas.

It's a saw:jumpingSm

Runs great. Does not vibrate much at all, lotsa power.

did manage to throw the chain once...my fault. the kill switch is cheeseball, but it usually works.

Durability? dunno, I'll report back in a couple years.

Well that didn't take long... broke some little pastic thing that makes the motor rev up when you squeeze the trigger. I was out cuttin' wood, all had been good, picked up the saw to cut some more, and wouldn't rev properly...

lasted 1 week exactly
