OWEN COUNTY — Two Patricksburg men are dead today after a family drama turned deadly.
State police and Owen County Sheriff’s deputies were called to 10060 Ind. 246 just before just before midnight Thursday on a report of two men shot.
According to Sgt. Todd Ringle, 72-year-old Jack Coons pointed a .22 caliber rifle at his daughter following an argument. Coons had walked 100 feet from his mobile home to his daughter’s, according to Ringle.
Coons did not shoot his daughter, but did fire several rounds into the ground.
Mark D. Fulk, 58, who also lives in a mobile home nearby, came outside to see what the commotion was, Ringle said. Mark D. Fulk is Coons’ daughter’s father-in-law.
Coons retrieved from his mobile home a 12-gauge shotgun. He shot and killed Mark D. Fulk, Ringle said. Coons then fired several shots into his daughter’s trailer.
The victim’s son, Mark D. Fulk, II, 27, who is Coons’ daughter’s husband and his son-in-law, then got his shotgun and shot and killed Coons.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the shooting by Mark Fulk II, was justified. However, the investigation is continuing,” Ringle stated.
Fulk was airlifted to Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis, where he died. Coons was taken to Bloomington Hospital where he later died.
Investigating are Detective Brad Stille and Sgt. Kevin Hobson with the Indiana State Police and Dan McBride with the Owen County prosecutor’s office. The Owen County Sheriff’s Department is assisting.
