Cool Torch - Uses Gasoline/Oxygen

Petrogen has a cool cutting torch that appears to be better in several ways than the old standard oxy/acetylene torch.
2 1/2 gals of gasoline < $6.00 does the cutting of 250 cu ft of acetylene - around $85.00. And because it cuts faster than acetylene, it uses less oxygen than the acetylene torch.

Video here.

I guess though, I'll keep using acetylene :pat: since it's already paid for.

:yum: I thought I was in the jokes forum. No way did I think you were serious. Looks pretty cool. Still concerned about safety, but I like they way their are thinking. :thumb: Good find!

Cost? The portable/backpack unit looks like the ideal size for a hobby torch/cutter.

WHERE YA BUYING YOUR GASOLINE?????????? It's over $3.35 around here!!

OK guys, I had to call. The standard package is ...........(drum roll).............................................................................
only 1469.:4_11_9:
For that price, I guess I'll keep using acy. also. But dang, that looks neat, and would be nice to have for somebody that does a lot of cutting. In that case, I would probably look farther into it!
humor me, good find!!

:smileywac Ouch! You need to do a lot of cutting to justify that!

Wow! The available tips range up to the one for 14 inch steel!! Just the thing for scrapping battleships in the Asian scrapyards.

The backpack version is limited by its small oxygen bottle to about 20 minutes per bottle. I would consider that a specialty unit for rescue or maybe for climbing into rafters etc, with the standard unit (oxygen bottle is on a hand truck) a better choice for general use.

I'm pretty sure I only have about $500 into my newer O/A set up and that includes a pretty complete set of cutting tips and the tanks. But I barely ever cut stuff.

It's an interesting concept - it looks like the gas is pressurized up to around 100 psi.

I know what you mean. I have many tools to cut stuff - and they are all paid for - :thumb:

I had no idea its price would be soooo high - what they need is Chinese competition...:yum:

They must have a good seal to keep the gas in the container at 100 PSI, I wonder if they could use a bladder and use the OXY pressure to keep it up to proper pressure with a regulator.

I only uses 10 to 20 PSI gasoline and 30-35 PSI Oxygen to cut 4 inches of steel. According to their start up instructions. I think 100 PSI would be a little high!

That sure is a good idea for a cutting torch. But why does it cost so much ? is it just because it is a new idea .:smileywac :smileywac

That's it.
After all, if it was your baby (the invention), wouldn't you try to make hay, at least until you get some competition.

Competition is what's going to bring the price to a reasonable level, of course, then as soon as someone makes a workable, affordable version, then you'll have these guys (and maybe the compressed gas industry as a whole) counter-attacking yours because it's unsafe - it's gonna blow up in your face etc.

Truth is, I'll bet it wouldn't be hard to figure out how to make a system like that, just be ready for the boom :4_11_9: of failure.

I've used Oxy/Propane for quite a while because it works just as well and is considerably less expensive than O/A. For finer stuff I use my plasma cutter. There again, my plasma cutter will do somewhat larger stuff as I used it to cut up railroad tracks into lengths. I wanted a smoother cut but didn't want to setup the band saw. That's about as big as my plasma cutter will cut. My O/P torch cuts stuff like that just fine and is what about 90% of the metal scrapping places around here use as well as what the larger metal working shops use to hack off heavy stuff.

With the huge initial price of the O/G setup, I don't see many takers going from the O/P rigs. A really good O/P setup generally costs less than an O/A setup. I find that I almost never use my O/A anymore. An added benefit I discovered one Sunday. I ran out of propane and no place was open on Sunday afternoon. So...I just grabbed the tank out of the gas grill and went on about my business. Being able to do that sort of negates an advantage of using gasoline; readily available on weekends and holidays. It seems that every other gas station now either refills or sells exchange propane tanks.
