Antarctica base gets 16,500 condoms before darkness

Mon Jun 9, 2008 1:24pm EDT

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - One of the last shipments to a U.S. research base in Antarctica before the onset of winter darkness was a year's supply of condoms, a New Zealand newspaper reported Monday.

Bill Henriksen, the manager of the McMurdo base station, said nearly 16,500 condoms were delivered last month and would be made available, free of charge, to staff throughout the year to avoid the potential embarrassment of having to buy them.

The base only has a skeleton staff through the long winter.

"Since everybody knows everyone, it becomes a little bit uncomfortable," Henriksen told the Southland Times newspaper.

About 125 scientists and staff are stationed at McMurdo base, the largest community in Antarctica, during the winter months when there is constant darkness.

The first sunrise will occur on August 20 and McMurdo's population will start to increase again in September when supply flights resume, peaking at more than 1,000 during the summer period.

Looks like where I work! We have the Conditions listed differently: Phase 1 is just "Bad", Phase 2 is restricted travel, convoy only, and Phase 3 is like their "Condition 1", NO Travel! In true Phase 3/Condition One blow one cannot see more than about a foot. In this condition I have walked with a walkie Talkie in one hand, and the other on the hood of a Crew Cab Pick-up, feeling my way with my feet, and instructing the driver to inch forward, hoping that he wont inadvertentaly run over me. It took about an hour to go 100 feet this way and was very stressful on both the guide and the driver. We get 3 or 4 Phase 3 blow's each winter, and lots of phase 1 & 2 stuff. The North pole temperatures tend to run about 30 degrees warmer than South Pole Temperatures.

Those things really make a mess of the waste water treatment system when they get flushed down the toilets...

Not to mention that there is a lot of "TeePee" creeping with only a bit over a hundred people there for the dark part of the year.... If like most remote sites, there is only a fraction of women verses men... So really makes one wonder just whom is shagging whom....
