Compost

I have two types of compost. One is from "green" sources (chicken and rabbit droppings and bedding, coffee grounds, and vegetable matter) and the other is "anything" (animal carcasses, grease, paper). The green stuff gets used for various projects. The "anything" stuff get buried in a hole in the ground.

How soon do you need it?

My garden compost is cow manure, old grass clippings & leaves and ashes. Throw a bit of lime and triple-19 fertilizer. Let sit for a couple years and it looks like black soil.

That's basically how I do it, apart from the cow manure. I turn it 2 or 3 times a year with the FEL when I'm going by and soak it now and again if it doesn't rain.

How much do you need? The best compost I ever had was when I had the worm boxes. There are plenty of designs for them on the net. That's the place I used to throw my coffee grounds, egg shells and kitchen waste. If you just need a little bit now and again then the worms make magnificent compost and it's a bit quicker than just letting it sit around. Besides, you always a plentiful supply of worms for fishing.:clap:

Worm tailings are the very best compost. They will eat anything organic if it has enough moisture in it. Green compost made from plant materials, grass clippings, leaves and garden waste, coffee grounds, banana peels(excellet source of trace elements) and kitchen scraps.

Compost will work aerobic or anaerobic. But, aerobic is fastest and produces the best without a foul smell. Be sure the pile gets plenty of air. Either raise it above ground with air holes or, turn it often.

I mix soil into the pile, or sharp sand just to give it some water holding capacity. Keep it moist, turn it often and in the heat of summer you can make black gold in 60 days.

I would throw a can of bait worms into the pile as I first started it out. Also, most home stores and garden centers have compost starter. This is the molds and fungi you need to get rich processed black gold compost.

Once you have this working always put several shovel fulls of the old compost into any new batches. It will have mold and fungi spores throughout and plent of worm eggs. You should never have to buy the starters, worms and fungi, again.

Had a worm business for about 5 years that I ran from my basement. The wife had the most gorgeous plants inside and outside that you ever saw. When her sisters would ask for the compost I was always "just out for now.":yum: (Someone has to have the nicest plant in the family, so why not the one who meets my needs?) :flowers::w00t2::yum:
