CHUGSzilla Returns!

Yes, it’s true. Though it was done for the 2024 Sun Valley Serenade, there were a couple of issues that needed to be addressed. It was in its new home In Colorado, and WBJ1 was okay with dealing with the issues himself, but that isn’t right. “Our name is on it”, and it needs to run right. The Gorilla and I went to Colorado to pick it up….

We had basically used the same fuel system setup as we did on Thundercat. Though Thundercat’s has worked flawlessly, CHUGSzilla’s rubber fuel line from the fuel pump to the combination filter/pressure regulator leaked. Both machines were set up with Airtex electric fuel pumps. Those pumps were discontinued when we installed fuel injection on the 1544, so we used a Walbro pump on that project. The Walbro pump can be plumbed with AN fittings instead of rubber fuel hose as required by the Airtex pumps, so we removed the Airtex pump and installed a new Walbro pump on CHUGSzilla. The two rubber fuel lines; from the water separating fuel filter to the fuel pump, and from the pump to the filter/pressure regulator were replaced with bent steel lines and a combination of AN and JIC fittings. (We think this is a better design and we’ll make the same changes to Thundercat’s fuel system.)

New fuel line from the water separating fuel filter to the new Walbro pump. And from the pump to the filter/pressure regulator. The Walbro pumps are much louder than the Airtex pumps, so we wrapped the pump in adhesive backed neoprene to reduce the noise. And yes, Scott stuck to his “I’m done bending fuel lines" obstinance.

When we changed the radiator to the Ron Davis Racing radiator the airflow from the electric fans blew across the air filter element. That isn’t ideal so we re-plumbed the air intake system to a similar configuration we used on Thundercat.

“Before" air intake plumbing.

The engine’s ecm had been sent to LSX Power Tuning in Texas for reprogramming. The engine ran pretty well, but it triggered the check engine light. We were able to address most of the issues, but not the “Bank 1 Too Lean" and "Bank 2 Too Lean” trouble codes. They (LSX Power Tuning) suggested we buy some fairly expensive hardware where we could download engine parameters while running the machine in snow at altitude. We’d then send that data and the ecm to them, and they’d adjust the programming.

Well, WBJ1 found a company in SLC that did dyno tuning. The only problem was their dyno wasn’t set up for snowcat tracks. So, The Gorilla and I removed the carriers and tracks and put CHUGSzilla back on wheels and tires so they could run the machine on their dyno while making programming changes. “While we had it apart” WBJ1 asked us to change the sprocket drum fasteners to the same setup we had recently upgraded Thundercat to. We also used the 60º chamfer bit and modified the sprocket drums for conically shaped lug nuts.

While at the dyno tuner they found the two rubber vacuum fittings between the engine and the transmission modulator had cracked. Those were simple molded rubber 90º fittings, but they both failed. There is one of those same fittings on Thundercat, and it’s fine. There is precious little room between the Allison modulator and the Tucker truss frame and installing the fittings is a challenge.

Here’s a pic of Thundercat’s set up.

New fittings made from three ply reinforced silicone have been ordered. We’ll install those presumably much stronger fittings on both machines.

Here’s the ugly green machine back on tires at the dyno tuning company.

We’ve started the process of reinstalling all the carriers and tracks. If we’re able to get that done fairly expeditiously we would like to take the machine out to the mountains and verify everything is working properly. There really is no substitute for testing in real world conditions and verifying operational performance beats blindly hoping the dyno company got it right. As the saying goes, hope is not a strategy.

Hideous machine with front tracks reinstalled.

BTW, rumor has it that The Infamous WBJ1 will be buying a suitable tow vehicle and CHUGSzilla will make it to at least one snowcat event in 2026.

He keeps mentioning a Cybertruck…. Talk about an ugly duo; a Cybertruck pulling a hideous green Tucker. That could only come from the mind of The Infamous WBJ1. And knowing him? He'd have in wrapped in a hideous green wrap.

Looks great.. and a job well done on the intake plumbing. Wish we would have ran hard lines for our injection system like that, much cleaner and never have to worry about decay or leaking.

The fan shroud and fan setup looks like it can pull a fair amount of air, I assume it’s enough to keep that LS cool?

ah, there is a MAACO at 8411 S. State St, Sandy, Utah, thinking about a "go fund me Orange" fund and end this tragedy, new door is a great idea.

I wonder if they'd paint a Tucker?

Of course there is also the little matter of sneaking it out from under The Gorilla's watchful eye. He professes to like the green.

However:

- A.) He's colorblind.

-B.) I think he's angling for membership in The Green Tucker Mafia.

-C.) When he first saw the color of the paint, his exact words were "My God, that's an awful color".

That radiator/fan combination works very well.

mmmmmm, maybe serenades, jamborees, tucker mafia gatherings, clowders, and or ?, should have a ban on green Tucker snow cats

you guys are impressive for standing behind your work and solving the code issues professionally, all so that green thing can crush snow flakes

did the dual exhaust, also help in reducing engine temps?
Dual exhaust was a huge improvement as far as temperatures, both engine and hydraulic fluid. Absolutely worthwhile.

Of course the multiple hours spent on cleaning up the welds and polishing the stainless steel... was a complete waste of time. It looked really great... until we actually used the machine. But it's a snow cat, not a show cat.

Going to have to plan on leaving 2-3 weeks early to make it, or have a generator running full time in the bed to stretch the distance!

I have a green snow cat.
I feel attacked.

Edited to correct.

I have 3 green snowcats....

don't feel attacked, nothing personal,

just a very strong dislike of green tucker snow cats,

you are most welcome to buy all the green non-tucker snow cats you wish, and please do so, buy buy buy buy buy

The rear carriers and tracks have been installed, along with the front driveshaft (removed for dyno considerations). The broken vacuum line fittings have been replaced with the ones made of reinforced silicone. These are much more robust than the molded rubber ones.

Right now we’re planning on taking CHUGSzilla out for testing this weekend to verify the dyno tuning has corrected the lean condition.

I realize many, if not most, forum members have put their cats away for the summer, but in Northern Utah there is still a lot of snow. All of the Northern Utah reporting areas have more than 100% of normal “snow water equivalent”, and statistically speaking the end of March/first part of April is when the peak is reached.

Well the anticipated testing… turned out to be a complete bust.

While there is still plenty of snow at my house, there was basically none at the trail head. We drove in about half a mile on mostly dirt with some mud and a little snow and we discussed the questionable conditions. How much father are we going to have to go before there’s adequate snow? Then the check engine light came on at the same time throttle input via the electronic gas pedal died. The engine ran, but stepping on the pedal did nothing. We shut the engine off and investigated, but there was nothing obvious. Re starting the engine returned pedal function.

But with inadequate snow and a throttle input issue, it was an easy decision to abort the testing. When we got back to the trailer the Gorilla broke out his OBD scan tool and it showed a trouble code of P2138. Apparently, that indicates a voltage disagreement between the throttle pedal and the throttle position sensor. We have some investigating to do.

Testing-wise, Cedar Hollow is done for the year, unless we get a massive dumping of snow. But all is not lost. Utah State Highway 150, aka: Mirror Lake Highway, runs from Kamas, UT to Evanston, WY. That road is not plowed in winter from about eight miles east of Kamas until close to Bear River Service in WY. Usually they bring out big snow removal equipment and clear the road over the summit just before Memorial Day.

In fact, the very first time we tested Thundercat was on May 29th. We’ll need to wait until the road is open so we can trailer the ugly green machine high enough that we’re unloading where there is snow for testing. But it won’t be what I call the unmolested fields of powder we were hoping for.

Pics from Thundercat's initial testing on that May 29th from several years ago.
