Choosing a College ~ did you limit your child's choices?

Just curious, but as my daughter has been getting all sorts of recruitment letters/invitations from colleges around the country I'm curious what some of you other folks have done when you've had your kids recruited.

This is my only child, so its my first time watching her go through the brochures.

Did you tell your kids that they could NOT go too far away? Did you push them for a school in your area (state, neighboring state, etc)? Did you say anything about international schools? Did you encourage them to choose the best? Or to go simply find one they would like, no matter where it was?

I'm simply unsure how to handle all this. My kid is one of those 'smart' kids is actually considering Oxford University in England as one of her possible choices, several of the IVY LEAGUE schools are on her list. I'm not thrilled with these choices, but I've not said anything other than "I hope you get a scholarship to help pay the way!" She is still only a sophomore so there is time for her to decide after she makes some campus visits.

Given her diabetes, my wife and I would prefer a school in the midwest just in case of an emergency. There are several "top 50" universities located within a few hundred miles. Far enough to give her distance, close enough that we could drive there at the drop of a hat in an emergency.

Don't know about others but U of MN has a substantial effort with 1st year students because of the high 1st year drop out rates. Having an older cousin transfer to the Med School and relatives in the area helped.

One option is Summer international internships. The cousin while an undergrad went to Peru on some kind of children immunization project, the kids language expertise was valued.

I think Oxford is linked to the Rhoades Scholarship.

Tip: Their college gf or bf will be posted of Facebook before you know it...

I'm dealing with the same thing you are. Getting tons of letters and also had a recruiter come to the house. My daughter is also smart but she also wants to play softball in college. Originally she wanted to travel to wherever but now she wants to stay closer to home which I am happy about. I really can't help you though because I think I'm still in denial. I wish we could keep them little forever.

Mell...I know it is real easy to try to hold them close....but with our girls I tryed to always encourage each of them to do their own thing...and to let them know we were with them in what ever they wanted to do....even though my heart would want them closer.....AND my bilfold realy wanted them to PICK A CHEEPER one!!!!!! first one wanted to be a nurse....got her RN masters degree.....and then went back to school and is now a school adminastrater......#2 went to school to be a CPA...got that then became a RN....working with termanaly ill children.....#3 wanted to be a vet...went through school...but faints at the site of surgury!!!! became a CPA..got her mba..and now is starting RN school in florida I think next month.....#4 our baby!!!He He she hates that!!! became a CPA...got a batch in ba and then went to RN school out in seatle wash just finished her masters and is thinking of going on into hospital admin...so dont even think that it will be over in 4 years.........the time will come when the phone rings your billfold will curl up in the corner of your pocket and start to whimper!!!!!!!!!Good luck... God be with ya and enjoy the ride!!!!!!its great!!!!!:yum::yum:

Jeff attended police academy in Toledo after taking some courses at Defiance College, so that wasn't such a drive.
Ty never went to college, which is something that I am sad about to this day.
He finally got his GED at age 21.

Bob.. Oxford????
Could you and Mrs. S live with that?

What about http://www.smwc.edu/

At least she'd be somewhat close to home. :flowers:

She is way too smart for St Mary of the Woods. She has no desire to look at Notre Dame.

Washington University in St Louis is the closest school she is currently considering. Its a great school, ranked #13 in the nation (several spots ahead of Notre Dame, but that is only 90 minutes away). She is pretty much limiting her choices to schools that rank in the top 50. Also not looking at Northwestern, which is ranked #11, but only 90 minutes the other direction, or U of C, with is #9 but less than an hour away. She seems to be focusing on enrollment under 15,000 and tuition over $35,000!!!

All three of our children knew the drill...you can go anywhere you can get accepted to, but THIS is how much we will be contributing, and the rest is up to you to make up in the form of scholarships and loans. They all did well, did it in 4 years, paid off their student loans, have good jobs and I'm not in the poor house. God bless you folks who have money or are willing to go into debt for your children's college education. Your children are very fortunate. I got zero financial help from family when I went to college, and my contribution to the kids college was a bonus for them. I believe they did better in school because they had a vested interest in the outcome, but that's JMHO.
