Chemicals for weeds/grass?

dzalphakilo

Pic is of the french drainage ditch in front of the house. About eight times a summer I have to take the weed eater out and work around the rocks seen in the pic. Wondering if anyone can reccomend a chemical to spray that will destroy the grass/weeds around all the rocks? Of course have dogs and will need to consider that as well. Any suggestions? (instead of trying to "weed" around the rocks).

Since I have it laying around, I've been using Round-Up on my open french drains. It's not what it used to be and I have to apply it twice to get a thorough kill. I've used the Spectracide equivalent and it works much better (and faster).

Once I do finally get them killed, I use a torch (something like this) to burn the dead stuff off so it looks better. The ashes will wash off after a rain or 2.

Pineridge told me about a online site that sells good chemicals that last a long time and don't have a heavy price tag on them. I will send him a email to wake him up to post to this thread the information. As for the dogs, that is always a problem. I would say that you would have to keep them off the area at least until the chemicals have done their job and there has been at least one rain to wash them away. If you have a well, that is another consideration. I would do more research before using anything that might contaminate my well water. Sometimes the ugly weeds are the lesser of the two evils....... Junk... the grump...

Round-up at stronger levels will last longer. Most of the "year long" herbicides are just really strong Glycophosphates (Round-up). If you want fast death try Triple Strike by "Spectracide" (I think - Gray bottle with green and yellow label).

Like PB said, Round-up is simply glyphosate
http://www.epa.gov/safewater/contaminants/dw_contamfs/glyphosa.html:

which is a non-selective herbicide. The most effective way I have found over the years is to mix a selective herbicide like Dicamba, MCPP or 2-4D with the glyphosate and apply per label instructions. It is also a good measure to use a surfactant, which will help the herbicide to stick to the plant long enough to work effectively. In some states, some of these herbicides may be restricted and require an applicators license to purchase.

I too think that my first concern would be the dogs and contamination of water. I have used the propane torch to burn weeds even when they are green. Takes a little longer but its fun. I have also been told that ash from the barbeque will stop weed growth in areas such as yours.

Yeah, after reading some instructions don't think I want to even come close to running a risk with the dogs. Guess I'll have some fun with a torch.

What type of gas does the torch use? What size container do you use with yours BC?

I have one that uses a 20# propane tank, but is too clumsy to handle for large areas.

The phrase "Need more hose" comes to mind. 10' is rather short.

I also use a 20# tank, but...
- My weeds are dead so they burn up probably 10x faster than a green plant and I can move quickly.
- I use the first 1/2 of the tanks fuel in the grill so the tank weighs a lot less.
- I'm only about a quarter of the age of Junk :)

Your 16????????
Nope.

I just guessed at the 1/4 of your age based on some of your previous posts

This is the first I found but there was another where you talked about being older than the mountains and such.

This old dog was born before Rex was a pup and I am older than dirt. In fact, I was the one that named dirt dirt.......:applause: :tiphat: I am so old that I qualified for the first Social Security Check that was issued......

I was just trying to make you feel young again..... You are nothing more than an old codger..... :respect: :yankchain:

The link BC provided to the "Flame weed dragon torch kit" has 10' of hose.

With a 20lb tank to haul around 10' seems short.

At about 1/2 full it's not much more than carrying around something a little heavier than a gallon of milk.

Also, most of my areas can be hit with the propane tank sitting on the ATV or UTV or little tractor so I can just ride around in the seat and burn everything.

Me thinks you need the exercise!

Well PB, you'd be right about that. :(

I have a pretty steep bank by the river I'd like to use the torch on. It's about 50' top to bottom and 100 feet wide. While I could use the exercise I'd rather get it chasing a little white ball (golf) or playing with a bigger bouncy ball (basketball). Go figure.

Dang. A good wind with a little petrol and that whole hill can go up in 30 seconds. Light it at the bottom and your done and off chasing a ball of some sort within 5 minutes. :thumb:

That's how my Dad used to do it. Slosh some gas on the bank toss a match and whoosh - bank cleared.

Don't see that being done much anymore.:confused2:
