Cedar Falls town hall wants access to your buildings

Amazing what the political putzes will try to get away with in the name of "safety".

In Cedar Falls they want business owners to place universal lock boxes on their properties so cops, firemen and other city employees will have access to their properties. All in the name of safety. Property owners will be forced to participate, if their city council has their way. This will apparently include businesses, as well as rental properties. And this council doesn't really care about the Constitutionality of their ruling. Hopefully the people of that city will force them to rethink their position, throw them out and replace them them with better people.

If this did pass, I'd never give them a key. Talk about an over reaching government!

Hope they have a big place for the next meeting. This bunch needs to be run out of town with crazy ideas like this. No need for this invasion of privacy no matter how many stupid excuses they come up with.

Much better they bust your door down instead to get in an put out the fire. Actually I think that is probably faster anyway, if they do it right. Much ado about nothing.

I agree, much ado about nothing. We can trust the city workers with our keys. There has never been a city worker who has stolen items, embezzled or otherwise lost public trust. And with the 'universal' type lock boxes where all are keyed the same, like TSA approved luggage locks, we know that security is at the forefront. The fact that apparently public works employees would also have access to the lock boxes also gives one a greater sence of security because that multiplies the number of people with access to your property well beyond just emergency responders. Yup, I'd feel safer in that community.

/sarcasm off

If that was my town and they wanted my keys I'd give them up just as quickly I'd give up my guns. Come and get them!

It is already in place in a lot of cities already. On many of the projects I work on the keys are there for the fire department only.

When I ran resturants in Philly they all had lock boxes with keys. I never, ever remember hearing about a problem. Also, I bet if they made it voulentary after all the "goooberment bad" silliness settled down and buisness owners stopped to think about it they would do it anyway. Again, much ado about nothing.

It must suck to be soooo paranoid.

Just because some people have allowed it to happen around them doesn't make it right ........ I see it as poor judgement or should I say voting!

Call it paranoid if you must but I have to ask Mak , the resturants you ran in Philly were they your owner did you just work for someone that chose to have the lockboxes . One helluva difference IMHO .

Besides I would much rather be carefull ( paranoid to you ) then too friggen trusting of who the hell has access to my property, records or any other damn thing they choose to snoop around for . That is when THEY decide they THINK they have good reson to need entrance, & lord knows I'm sure they would use their best judgement.

in the vid, they're making them do it. From what i've seen in most other places it's voluntary
Thats the way the ATF is now at least in Kansas . I have a good buddy that has been a gunsmith for years, he also has been a gun dealer for the last 20 years and his place was so secure no one had ever been able to break into it . He even had railroad Iron around the building to keep it from the smash and grab that seems to be so popular .

About 15 years ago the ATF demanded Not only keys to the gates, building and cash registers , but also the safe combinations and complete blueprints of the layout . All of this or he would not be able to renew his licence . He said fuck you and closed his buisness that had a perfect record of no problems , breakins/thefts , firecalls or any other reason anyone needed to be called out . :hammer:

I was not the owner. I have not thought about this in 20 years or more. It seems to me the front security doors sometimes cost $5,000 or more for simple aluminium with reinforced glass. The reason for the box is obvious. I dont trust my government very much either, but somtimes you just gotta use your head.

I see a large difference between voluntarily making a key available for emergency services and having it jammed down your throat.

This is from Bob's Sig, it rings true.

"We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion:
the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases,
while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage
of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force."
- Ayn Rand

OK I guess I can see it if "they" make you. But if "they" destroy $10,000 dollars worth of front door cause your coffee pot is burning up, just say, "thank you."

So hey, let me ask you. Would you still have your fire alarms go off at the FD, cause then "they" can pretty much enter at will, no matter how much force it takes.

I have allways tryed to be responsable for anything that happens to me or my family including property personal or real estate . I dont call 911 period , If I cant make things safe enough and even if a fire were to start that I couldn,t deal with myself thats why I pay insurance . As far as breakins I dont worry about that either because I am allways here .

Yes it could happen even to me but I take every precaution to make damn sure it WONT . Yes I am the exception to the rule but only because I choose to be and in the situation to where I CAN be that way . Now that my wife is retired and in training to be a hermit its only going to get better .

If I dont know something , or need advice on something I come to my FF family even though I may be considered to be the "black sheep of the family" Which certainly aint nuttin new to me as even my brother and last living sister aint allowed on our property, And I love them I just cant stand being around them . :flowers:

Call me weird or whatever you want but I will never die in a traffic accident, flying or go down in a boat . I plan on dying and hopefully my wife as well long after I am gone the good Lord willing , on OUR property whenever the time may come and I also dont expect any of you other good folks money to pay for it or when I have a runny nose .

That being said I cant control what mother nature throws at me or God decides to happen , I can only be the best prepared for anything that I can , dont need or ask for anyones help much less expect it . IF that makes me paranoid , I'm good with that .

As a fire fighter it has saved many doors been broken too for a fire alarm or fire that has been my experience.

Make sure the government has the the key holders bonded for your loss.

Off the record I have one business that refused to work with us I sat down with him and couldn't convince him to work with us (fire dept) he still resisted I said well the twp supervisors require a set of keys in the box it doesn't say they have to work!
The twp got there keys in the box and all the paper work saying there were keys in the box they were Toyota keys:w00t2:

Then the building owner said what would happen if there was a fire I said we would try the keys if they didn't work we went to plan B.
He asked what that was I said vise grips on the lock cylinder and pull it out and open the door then to plan C halligen tool through the glass.

He said he was fine with that he had insurance on the glass.

Most glass doors can be opened with a pair of vise grips and a right angle screwdriver.
Your best defense is a good alarm system in my opinion.

I have a friend that had a gun shop and he had 2 systems one local and one monitored both wired independently of one another.
