What do you know about cataracts?

I've just returned from the eye doctor / surgeon and was informed I have cataracts in both eyes. The right eye is worse and will need surgery first. Now days they remove the entire lens and replace it with a plastic one.
Normally they put in a lens which will help with long distance sight so that you can drive without glasses, but now there is an option for a 'hinged' plastic lens which would help me see far away and close up without glasses.

I'll be looking into the options and having the surgery sometime next year.

My mom is getting her eyes done here soon. We found out from a family friend that when you get it done, you should have both eyes done at the same time. He has 20/20 vision now. If they would have waited the week between each eye, he wouldn't have 20/20. Well, that's what two different doctors told him. Just something for you to look into. :)

Interesting. I hadn't heard that before. I know nothing about cataracts and am so old-school that I won't wear contacts nor consider any sort of laser corrections. Basically, I just wear my glasses.

Years ago, I thought it was considered to be a good practice to not have both eyes done at the same time. If anything went wrong or your doctor sucked, at least only one eye was messed up.

You are correct that on that...Years ago it was good practice to do that. But from what I have heard from others getting it done, the closer together the better. For some reason (unknown to me) your eye don't get the best vision possible, the longer you wait. I speak not from personal experience but from friends I know who have had it done.

Just something for him to look into.....

I was advised that the hinged lens inparticular works best when both eyes have it. So he said I would most likely need glasses after the 1st surgery. He did not even suggest that I do them both together. Interesting though. I'll be doing some research for sure.

My MIL had both of hers done about six months apart. They used the only method that I was aware called phacoemulsification. They insert a needle under the lens and break up the cloudy part with sound waves and suck it out. Requires a much smaller incision.

Yep, that is exactly how they explained it to me. Rep points for using the biggest word EVER on FF (that I've noticed anyway). My doctor didn't even say that word.

Medical Mary Jane!!!! Yippee. :yum: funny, the doctor didn't mention that to me. :D

I think your getting cataracts mixed up with glaucoma.

Dayum, I am impressed! lol
Good luck Doc. ;)

Thanks Loralei! Good to see you posting. I missed you for last week or so.

Doc,
Im sorry to hear about the cataracts. My mom had one removed and she now has good vision in that one eye. I dont know what they did as far as any lens. I hope all works out for you though. God Bless.

Went to the eye surgeon this week when my neurologist told me that I have cataracts, and the eye surgeon said that they were not bad enough to operate on. Suggested that I get glasses to correct my vision. I don't need correction for most things. I think it might be time to get a second opinion. How bad do they need to be before they operate?????

Should have got glucoma, then you would have a good reason to smoke pot. (that was suppose to be funny!) I do not think cataracts are necessarily progressive, but they are completely out of my field. Be back. Yea, I did a quick check and the prognosis depends a lot on etilology. every thing from diabetes to welding causes them, some get worse adn some dont. The good news is they are a 1000 times better at the surgeries now days.
