Carpal tunnel Syndorme

muleman

Gone But Not Forgotten
Kirk, this is most likely caused by years of steering left handed and working 3pt. and pto controls with your right. Stop and think of how many times you have raised and lowered tillage equipment and engaged pto controls in just one year. There is no easy way around it. I would get a second opinion but not delay or you might miss snocat time. You know as soon as you get it done we will get a bunch of snow. Then you can show the girls how to run your snowblower.:flowers:

AAACCCKKK - NO SURGERY!!!! Not yet anyway. Find out what is causing the tunnel to have pressure and get that underlying cause fixed.

Carpal Tunnel issues are usually caused by some other medical issue. I have dealt with this "work related injury" for just about me entire career.

Find a specialist in carpal tunnel issues.

It could be many things, like too much wrist movement Kirk. Stop the wrist movement! Did you hear me? Now stop it!

But seriously, could be diabetes, a thyroid condition, and all sorts of stuff. Read up on this thing before you do surgery.

Fred,

Thanks for the concern...

I have been reading about this. I am pretty sure I don't have the underlying factors that can cause this. I am quite hard on my hands, and I know it. Doing what I do for a living have let them scared and caloused. Impact damage is my guess, and I have probably earned it the hard way. The rotator cuff of the same shoulder is probably not to good either....

I certainly will be asking lots of questions of the doctor involved, before I let them cut me....We will check for other causes before we do.

Regards, Kirk

I have had both right and left hand done a while apart, apart from slight lack of strength in my thumbs, both are ok now. I have arthritis in my hands anyway so that may explain the lack of strength.

Kirk i have the same problems now gropping up in both hands. as you may remember if Tim hung on my hands too hard i would jump with pain. the diagnoses on my back was the same situation as cts with inflamation of the nervs running through the base of my spinal cord doc put me on pregnazone for it to reduce the inflamation. here is the side effect for the last 10 years i have been droping things ,for the last 5 not sleeping well from tingling and numness in my arms ,going to iraq where i was on a plane for 20 hours was torture. since i started pregnazone no pain, tingling or droping things, i can start fastners with my hands, they don't get cold anymore , and Mini Me can be as hyper as he wants and can't hurt me. i will be talking about staying on this treatment for a while

DDS, please make sure you understand the long term side effects of Prednisone. I took 2.5 mg, 3 times a week for approximately 15 years and had significant bone density loss (Osteoporosis).

Pewsniaonw is a wonderful drug, but has some very significant side effects when used for an extended time. Your doctor should be able to explain the side effects to you.

You can also google Prednisone side effects.

I'm no doctor and have not stayed at a holiday inn express yet after my chat with the doc that would not be his recomendation. how ever knowing that anti inflamitorys have seemed to have fixed the problem for the time. its likely we will be looking at other drugs for the long term before surgery is under taken as he claimes that a lot of cts surgerys are done when the root cause of the problem is nothing more than inflamation that with a little theropy and mediciene could be cured or put off for a lot longer time. the key to getting inflamation down is to stop using the affected aera so much ie. change hands let the other one rest

After seeing the sureon yesterday,

I will try a splint 24/7 for 2 weeks before we go any farther with this. Then we will decide of surery is the best option or not. So far the spint isn't that big of a deal to wear. This will also allow me to get the outdoor work done first.

Having surgery this AM for this condition. Not looking foreward to being left handed for a week or two. Certain things one does with their strong hand I won't be able to do well left handed. But if this helps it will be worth it for sure. Maybe I will be able to sleep all night for a change. Or just be able to sleep in without getting up because of the discomfort. I guess we shall see....

Must not drink or eat this AM....

Regards, Kirk

Best wishes to you Kirk. Hoping this eases your pain and fixes you right up.

Yup - I think the butt wipe was the hardest thing to do with your weak hand. It's something you just don't think about but suddenly have to.

As to the rest - you'll be fine. I was driving the tractor and doing light yard work the next day.

The first time you go to the toilet will be tough. About the time you get used to it you will be using the other hand. Brushing teeth bothered me more. Hope it works out for you.

PB,

You are soooo right about that. When I was wearing a splint, I discovered this, and was removing it to do so.........:whistling: Not an option after surgery.....

Witch by the way did not happen. Originally I was to be there at 6Am for check in. Then last Friday at the end of the day I was called and informed it would be 10:00 Monday before I should show up...

So at 9:30 I checked in and 20 minutes later I am in my boxers and a gown. It was cold in the room so I got a blanket and a nurse brought me another. 10:00 comes......and goes...soon it's 11:00 and finally a nurse comes to my suite...She informs me there is an issue with the schedule as one of the doctors surgeries took longer than it normally would, and that I am 2nd line after that. She tipp toed around about, and told me it might be as late as 2:00 before I would be taken to the surgical suite and my arm nummed witch takes 45 min to an hour...

By this time i was hungry thursty and cold to boot....I got my jacket and long johns and put them on and waited for 3 more hours.....

At 1:50 the nurse told me I that it would be 3:00 or a bit after before they could move me to surgery and numb my arm. I told her to please leave my room:glare::glare:...

I called my wife and father who was to drive me home and told them I was pissed enough that I was about to check myself out. Dad came to the room, and could tell how furious I was. He told me he didn't blame me for leaving, and that was all it took. I got dressed and went to the nurses station and told them to tell the doctor his schedule was going to get lighter, and that he should call me and reschedule this preceedure on a day when he has the time, as obviously today he didn't. Then I walked out...:whistling:

SO I will be wating for is office to call. It's an hour drive to this hospital by the way....

Was I out of line? I don't think so....Wish I could bill them for wasting my time...

They jerked me around for 3 hours to fix my rotator cuff. If the wife would not have been there I would have left. I do leave after 1 1/2 hours at the doctors office. I always try to get morning appointments when I can so they have less excuses. Hope you get it worked out.:flowers:

Ha - I had a similar experience on my first surgery! Then they started freaking out about my BP being too high. I explained that if they had their act together that maybe my BP wouldn't be through the roof.

Good for you for not waiting around but watch out that they don't try to charge you for the time you spent "in their care". They are freakin' vultures.

Mule,

Not to mention I didn't want a tired over scheduled surgeon cutting me at the end of the all day surgery he did today. I want a fresh one and will arrive early to get one. That was originally the deal.....

I had lots to do today, and this week for that matter. I don't ever leave someone waiting naked for 5 hours+ as it would have been by the time the arm was numb...

I really think I did him a favor....I think he just had too much on his hands today to fix mine! I think he'll get the message....He is working for ME not the other way around....

Regards, Kirk

Or he played an extra 9 holes of golf. I was at the cancer center at 7:46 for my 8:00 with the Doc. Plenty of parking and only 1 other person waiting. There are always a bunch of folks in the chairs getting chemo but those girls run a tight schedule in there. And i must say they are the nicest folks you could ever have to deal with. Quite a difference from the cardio group around the back side. Half those docs are jerkoffs.

typing one handed tonight. got 'er done today. Now i have to figure out how to sleep with an arm in a sling, with no feeling...it's numb still. Time will heal it fine I hope.

Regards, Kirk

Good luck with the healing process. Follow doctors orders as closely as you can, tough to do for sure but usually worth the extra effort.

Thanks all,

it sure hurts this AM...Won't be doing much today, I'm afraid, early weekend here...
