Canadair RAT on ebay

Neat machine. Would look great restored!!!!! Great machine for winter gatherings!!
I can just picture the trailer filled with ice and beer:whistling:

Here are some photos. What surprises me is how SMALL this unit is. Obviously a VW powered snowcat, but looks like a mini-Hagglunds.

INFO from the Classified Ad:

For sale is a CL-70 RAT (Remote Articulated Tracked), S/N 126, manufactured by Canadair Limited (CL) in 1958. It is an over-the-snow vehicle built for the Canadian Army. It is powered by a VW passenger car engine, floats, and steers by articulation. It is the lightest ground pressure military vehicle ever built, having less ground pressure per unit area than a man on snowshoes. Both halves are driven by the engine and two drive shafts, with a u-joint between the tubs. The steering is by articulation, accomplished with a steering wheel attached to a small drum with wire cables, similar to the steering mechanism in a small boat. NOTE: Package includes the original emergency engine crank for starting the engine if the battery dies, and also includes three CD manual copies—two for the vehicle and one for the engine. Vehicle was stored outside, but under cover. Seller removed the data plates about 15 years ago and put them in an envelope, so they are in pretty good condition for their age. Electrical system is 6 volts. The glass in the running lights is light purple, which is the glass turning from the sun (similar to the purple glass in old bottles). Vehicle has 1,288 original miles on it. Also included are some newer replacement parts seller bought but did not install, such as an original-type headlamp bulb. Seller will also include eight each NOS Canadian military vehicle ID stickers for restoration purposes, printed around 1970 (the adhesive is still good), and some historical articles and other information gathered over the years. According to the following article, there is only one left, and that is in a museum. Now there are two! Vehicle is sold as is, local pickup only. No Reserve! Happy bidding, and good luck!

Condition details of specific areas:

1. Tracks.
The grousers are in pretty good condition mechanically, but they’re all rusty. Each grouser is bolted to the track belt with ten small bolts, three on each side and four in the middle. The belts are in fair shape, but they have a few small tears here and there so seller cannot guarantee their condition. They have the ends tied together with claw hinges (see picture of rear tub). The road wheels (rubber tires) were manufactured a long time ago, so even though it does roll today seller can’t guarantee the condition of the tires. The tire size is 3.40/3.00-5, manufactured by Goodyear. The drive sprockets appear almost new, with no wear on the driving side.

2. Body. The body is in pretty good condition. No rust anywhere on the tubs (because they’re aluminum). The bottom framework is steel and is rusty, but all the metal is there. There is no windshield or back canvas cover. The rear tub has a bend in the top rail on the driver’s side, but a good body guy could take it out with minimum trouble.

3. Gearshift lever. The bottom of the gearshift lever was fastened to the floor with a simple steel bracket, which has rusted apart. (The transmission is shifted by a rod fastened to the middle of the lever shaft.) It is a simple fix, but would be needed before the vehicle could be driven (except in one gear).

4. Operation. Vehicle ran when parked about 15 years ago. The power plant is an original VW engine, but was re-built in 1965. The bore, mains and rods are all .000. It has a military data plate affixed to the shroud, but the letters are faded. The engine is free and currently turns over with the starter, but there is no spark. A tune-up should fix that problem in short order. Steering works fine. Although seller has not had the vehicle in water, there are no visible holes, and it should float. There is a threaded cover for the hole through which the crank is inserted, which is included. Vehicle speed in water is about 3 mph, moved by the tracks.

5. Rust. There is rust where paint is missing on most of the steel support and chassis parts. There are two shock absorbers in the steering mechanism between the two tubs, and the rods have some rust on them.
