Just curious, but my daughter has been thinking about the military. She is a Type 1 Insulin Dependent Diabetic who is on an insulin pump 24/7/365. She's not interested in joining to be in a combat role, but rather in some sort of medical role.

Anyone know the rules for this type of thing?

Years ago, my friend who is type 1, was not able to join.

This was 20 years ago and he would have been a combat eligible enlistee.

No, you have to be 100%... Leaves a lot of good people out that want to serve.

It amazed me when I went to Coast Guard boot camp, you had to pass all sorts of screenings for medical and the like, then during the course of boot camp, about a quarter washed out due to "Medical" issues... go figure...

Sorry, Mel. That is a no-go. Heck, right now if you have a misdemeanor drug charge or more than three speeding tickets, you have to get a waiver.

i have to aggree they can waver a bunch of medical stuff along with crimminal history and even sexualality but uncle sam won't waver on diabeties here is a suggestion there is one other uniformed service alot of people don't know about she should look into public health service since she wants to work in the medical field anyway. and thanks to your daughter for wanting to try the military my daughter just joined the national guard i guess she is growing up. good luck too your daughter and do look into PHS.

Bob, my son Jeremy, was in the Navy ROTC program in High School. Once they found out he was insulin dependent they allowed him to finish that but told him a military future was not in the cards for him.
I don't know if things have changed since then, but I doubt it. The pump may make a difference but who knows. BTW he loves his pump and has had lots of malfunctions. I wonder how they'd get a replacement FedX'ed to him out in the field?

Even if it is well controlled and a flawless system, diabetics are very expensive to take care of in a post service setting, like the VA.

Bob what about the peace core as a option?

My cousin did it for years after she got her teaching degree
she traveled all over with them and settled in Gautama.

I hear wale wars has an opening (just kidding)

I do think it is a shame people who really wanna serve cannot becuase of health reasons. How bout the Church, does the Chruch have lay missions or something that would fulfill her need to serve?

To settle this question call a recruitier(sp)

Wait a minute have HER call and dad stay out this let her see the real world. :wow:
You may think I'm being uncareing and cold when it comes to your daughter as a Type 1 diabetic.
The PHS is as close or the Red Cross to being of medicial service.
Military Service you serve when and where they tell you to.
Now where do I get off saying what am. would 61 years of the last
66 years as a Type 1 have any bering on this. :whistling:

This was my advice to her a couple days ago. She just started her sophomore year in high school, she's all ready being recruited by New York University, she has a few places in mind, but has been asking about the military as an option. My wife is not in favor of it, she says our CURRENT military is not the military to join because the mission is muddled. I'd support her choice of either military or college, but she has plenty of time to consider all this. We have a recruitment center in the county seat, probably head over there one of these days.
