I made it out to the Kantishna River and pulled the axle off the imp.It broke at the spline end and left the splines in the rear end,any ideas on how I can get it pulled out?I pulled off the back cover but could not see any way to get to the axle end,it broke off flush, so I can't get a hold of it,hope I don't have to pull the other axle.:smileywac

Magnet ? :)

Drill a hole and tap it ?

Looks like it was nice and sunny...hope it wasn't too cold !

I had a small magnet with me but it was to weak, maybe a stronger magnet? I did not want to get filings in the rear end by drilling on it,thought about sticking a welding rod on it but the welder I have takes 220 to work, thank you for your input.

Hello Roughwoods, I was driving my way back to Fairbanks from Anchorage when you called me yesterday on my cell phone and lost signal/reception. I think you were in the middle of telling me where your axle broke off at. I now see from the photos the situation you face. I wish I had the experience to help you. I have never even removed my axles . I would suggest calling Tim at remote access for his advise, he is real helpful and dosent seem to mind talking over problems on the phone.
I think from my experience, looking at your situation. I would put it all back together, remove the entire transaxle as a unit. Roll it onto a sled and snowmachine it back to town where you can work on it in a warm shop. You have half the removal job done at this point anyway. Ive had my tranaxle out and its really just a nut and bolt job. The real challenge is dealing with stiff cold tracks. If you hauled a master heater and tarp that would help overcome those problems. Let me know how your plan develops and what things you need maybe I can help.

If the magnet won't get it out then try the welding rod trick. You can use 2 12v batteries in series and jumper cables. Fuse a welding rod or coat hanger or other rod onto that axle stub. Beats pulling that other axle (usually).

Good idea.

Also, if you place a magnet near your drill bit, the chips go there and not in the diff.

:thumb: I want to thank you all for the help ! I will be going back out by snowmobile in the next week or so,I will let you all know how it turns out,if anyone has any new ideas let me know.I just orderd a axle, just hope it gets here before all the snow is gone.:snow2_smi:

I had good luck with the magnet trick the two different times I broke axels on the Bombis I used to own. You may need to rock the drive train back and forth and also try lifting the vehicle on the other side to let gravity help. One more idea is to use an expoxy on a rod instead of welding. It might take a few hours to harden and set but beats possible damage from welding.
We just got another 20" of new snow down here in Trapper Creek. Looks like it is going to be a great winter!

Well I got the Imp axle in the mail today! The postal service did a fine job of geting the axle here they only lost the axle bearing, must of fell out the hole they put in the box?All of our snow has melted off and I will have to wait and go out by boat after the rivers are safe to run,It is a 150 mile run to our cabin on the Kantishna river the imp is up river from there about 2 bends.I just want to thank all of you for the help.

First.. we want to know where you found the axle and costs???....Second ...how many boxes of HOT TAMALES were sacrificed for this project ??:yum:

Got the axle from Peterson Equipment co.$ 675.00 --- $103.99 for the axle bearing that I did not get,and $38.10 for shipping that I really got.!!!13 boxes of hot tamales!!!$14. 85 per box maybe that is why my trail melted out early this year??:smileywac
