Broken again...

HI guys...long time no post...

Just wanted to drop in and get your thoughts on my tractor problems. I have a Cub Cadet 5234D diesel sub compact tractor 2004 model. Owned less than 2 years, 125 hours. In the 125 hours I have had the following repaired or replaced under warranty:

Original tranny repaired, still did not work...Then cub replaced entire tranny. I am on my second tranny.

3pt. hitch lift cylinder failed...replaced

Rear plastic body panel (large panel over both rear wheels) cracked due to manufacturing defect...replaced

Throttle linkage slipping...repaired

Now the tractor is back in the shop because the front axle is locked/bound up tight AND the 4wd transfer mechanism is locked up tight. This stuff broke at the same time. Dealer said that Cub wants to completely replace the front axle. They (Cub) knows there is a problem with the front axle binding up once the tractors get "some" hours on them. The dealer is going to repair the 4wd transfer mechanism.

Cub did give me an extra year of full warranty when they installed the second transmission so I have 1 more year of warranty. What is concerning is that Cub knows about the front axle problem but not telling the owners. I am just about at the end of the original 2 year warranty period and could have gotten screwed (I could have had to pay for a new front axle) if if I did not get that extra year of warranty from Cub.

Have I had enough go wrong (major problems) in such a short period of time to ask for my tractor to be replaced or bought back? Is that unreasonable? The tractor performs great when it is working but I am quite concerned about about long term dependabilty. Every major component has broken except for the engine. I am thinking about trading it or selling it once I get it back from the dealer if I can't get Cub to replace it with a 2006 model or buy it back. Any thoughts guys.....Thanks

I don't think the odds are very good that Cub will buy back your tractor but you sure have had more than your fair share of problems with it. I would seriously look at trading it in on a different brand. I know my local Cub/Kubota dealership seems to steer people toward the BX series Kubotas and away from the Cub Cadets.

I have to agree here. Just for your own personal peace of mind, I would put serous consideration into trading it for a different brand. If you don't, there will always be a cloud over you about what may go wrong at any moment.

Man, if there was a lemon law for tractors this would qualify I would guess.

Did you buy it new from this dealer your working with? It can't hurt to ask them to take it back and replace it. They might come up with a better deal for you than trading it in anyplace else. I figure they'd understand your frustration with this one. All cubs are not that problematic so even another cub should do you okay, if they offer the right deal. So, you've nothing to loose by asking in my opinion.

Doc, yes I bought it brand new from the dealer that has made all the repairs. I would gladly take another Cub, I really like my tractor, I just got a bad one of the bunch I think. I am leaning in the direction of asking for a replacement but I am doubtful Cub will do that as Bob said but then going for a great trade in deal on a new Cub. If I can't get either the replacement of a exceptional trade in deal on a new Cub then I will probably trade for another brand, I like the Massey GC2300 sub-cut.

Hey!

You couldn't go wrong with a CC 8000 series, just tell the dealer you wanna trade up...........................:D

Just my $0.02 but it seems to me that your dealer would probably not give you a great deal on a trade in because he'd have to sell that tractor to another buyer and he knows the service history. Now maybe he can honestly claim that all the problems have been fixed. But, and this is just an opinion, he may guess that there are more problems coming down the line because usually a lemon is a lemon is a lemon. I would almost guess that any other dealer would be looking at that tractor as a good trade in???

Good News!! My dealer called to let me know they replaced the front axle but only to discover there was a major internal transmission problem. A pinion was sheared off. Dealer called Cub to explain newly discovered problem and Cub told the dealer to replace my tractor with a brand new one at no charge! The dealer also mentioned that Cub may give me a very good deal on the next size up tractor, the 6284 which I am going to consider if the deal is exceptional. I'll find out what that deal is Monday.

I didn't have to get pissed off, I didn't even have to ask or just float the idea of a new tractor. This worked out very well, regardless if I get the larger 6284 or I get another 5234D which I was told that all the problems I have had on my 2004 model have been corrected on the 2006 model.

It's been a great day!!

WOW that is far better than I would have expected. Great news.

I dare ya to post this story over at TBN in the Kioti Owners forum! :yum::yum::yum::yum:

Dave, I would love to do that. But I have already been banned 3 times over there. :applause:

I don't want to get thrown out again...or do I.....hmmmm...maybe

I wouldn't mind stirring up the pot a little more in the Kioti forum again...piss off KiotiJohn.:yum: Seems they have quite a discussion going on regarding some faulty Kioti loaders.

Just an update...I am getting another 5234D free of charge, an 06 model that I have been assured that all the problems I had with my 04 model have been corrected on this model. New 2 year warranty starting from when the new tractor gets delivered, hopefully tomorrow, AND a new FEL package at Cub Cadet cost!:D :applause: :thumb: :boobies: :5boobs:

My new 2006 Cub 5234D...

Congrats Viking. I missed this the 1st time around.
Aren't you glad you asked. What a deal.
Cheers   :a1:

My new tractor pictured above (the second/replacement Cub 5234D) is now in the shop with 20 hours on it. This time it is not the transmission as with my first 5234D. The dealer says it is a engine problem. They have had the tractor for a week, discussed the problem with Cub Cadet and Diahatsu, the diesel engine manufacturer, and still no solution. The problem is the tractor engine rpm's slow way down when the tractor is under a load such as mowing uphill. On flat ground, dry grass there is not a problem but if the grass is thick or damp or you turn to cut uphill that's when the rpm's drop significantly, almost to the point of lugging the engine. This is not a problem that I ever had with my first 5234D. It always had plenty of power to cut thick grass, wet grass, uphill, didn't matter.

I'm about out of patience with these 5234D tractors. This is my second one and within 20 hours I already have a serious problem. I asked my dealer this afternoon for a quote on a trade on a Cub 6284 with full credit given to me on my 5234D w/ loader which I just paid an extra $1875 plus tax. I'm still waiting for that number.

I know my dealer is doing what he can. He did arrange for my first 5234D to be replaced free of charge. The 6284 is a little more than I need but I need a tractor I can rely on....maybe I'll make it all the way up to a Cub 8000 series...oh geez, but that's really a rebadged Kiotee....

Ummm...have you considered a Kioti... :hide: :yankchain:

How about just your hard earned money back and go elsewhere?

Is there a reason for the blind loyalty to that brand? They obviously have issues.

I actually considered a CK20 HST, but I don't want to deal with problematic loaders (cracking) and a high priced and difficult dealer to deal with. There was actually 3 Kioti dealers in my area 2 years ago, now there is one and he carries more and more AGCO tractors than Kioti's. I'm not confident that he will carry Kioti for the long run. Also, the Cub 6284 HST weighs close to the same as the CK20 HST but comes with a 28hp CAT diesel that has 21 pto hp compared to the 15.5 pto hp of the CK20. Plus, I'll get a better trade in on my 5234D which is very important right now.

AGCO has quality equipment. You won't go wrong if you go that route, but I don't know how small their CUTS go. The Kioti dealer here disappeared already. Deere, Kubota and NH rule the roost around these parts.

I have not pursued a refund. I originally bought my first 5234d back in August of 04 and when they offered to replace that tractor recently free of charge with a new 2006 model I jumped at that. I may bring up the subject of a refund if a reasonable solution is not offered promptly.

.......

It can happen to any equipment no matter how big the company or it's service department size! I really wish you luck on a great outcome to your tractor ordeal! I know it must be frustrating and I'm just jabbing a little. Us Kioti owners take a kickin' and keep on tickin' ..... ;)

Other than the lack of use when your tractor was being repaired, you got one hell of a deal. You got two years of tractor use and a new tractor free of charge. What more could they have done for you. Nice deal in my book.

Man have you ever been without your tractor????????????? ...especially after having it and knowing what COULD be done! Did you read the whole thread? The new second tractor is broke!!! That a callused statement IMO.

Remember his first tractor broke more than once and now the second one is down!

Sorry I can't agree at all with you Jim. They did what they needed to get it right and it still ain't right after 2 tractors.

Exactly....this is the point where you give all possible accolades to the dealer and the brand, with the exception that you finally have to admit there are problems with the product.

They did everything right, but still failed. It happens sometimes.
