Bought me an ATV today

Dargo

Like a bad penny...
Who all has ATVs? I haven't had an ATV in about 10 years or so. They seem to have changed a bit since then. I'm curious as to who all has what. I see that BC has a Suzuki that his daughter took from him.

Oh, since I bought me an ATV I guess I ought to buy myself a helmet. What is a really good full face helmet now? My old helmet from when I raced motocross is sort of dry rotted now.

OK, what did you get?

Yea, I currently have 2 Suzuki 50's and a Suzuki 80 for my kids. Well, the daughter goes for my 250 instead... Oh well. That little 80 is a blast and hauls me around just fine.

I've had a pile of ATV's but parted with most after getting the RTV. In '04 when I got the RTV, I had 7 ATV's and 2 go-karts sitting in the stable. Mainly Suzuki's but had a Kaw 700 recently and Honda machines years ago.

I'll have to look at the mfgr for the one I have but I've been really liking one of the flip-up full-face helmets I have. It's a full face but there's a button at the chin that allows you to flip up the lower face section and visor. Very handy for when you want to take a break, get some air or talk or whatever but don't really want to take your helmet off (especially in winter). I've tried some of the other flip-ups but didn't like the ones that had a button on both sides. It requires 2 hands to do it and very difficult to manage with gloves on.

If not interested in a flip-up, Shoei, HJC... are all good ones. Make sure it's Snell rated as well as DOT.

If you have smaller kids and they're going to grow through different helmet sizes, I like the Vega brand. You buy one shell and there's 3 different sized liners you can swap out as they grow.

If you're riding with others, I also like having a helmet headset. It fits in the helmet. Plug it into a FRS radio and you can talk to other riders via the headsets. This is a great option to put in the kids helmets as you're teaching them to ride. You can walk them through things or otherwise advise/control from a distance and talk right into their helmet. When they're on VOX, they can reply/talk without having to press any buttons.

This was my winter riding ATV. I sold it but may be able to get it back as the owner is looking for a newer, bigger machine.

I still have ATV's, Honda 450 ES and a Honda 300 foreman.
Time flys ... the 450 is a 99 and the 300 is a 96. Both still work fine if I can keep up with the batteries.

2 1999 Polaris Sportsman 500 4X4 - Bought New In 1999
1 1992 Yamaha Timberwolf 2X4 - Part Of A Property Purchase
1 1992 Honda 300 Fourtrax 2X4 - Part Of A Property Purchase

They just seem go on and on like the energizer bunny. If taken care of they will last forever. The wife thought I should get a new one but the 7K price is just not worth what you get when you already have one suitable to do what you need. We use them around our properties and sometimes abuse them with the work load. I bought a new gel cell battery for my Polaris today. That is one item that seems to go bad too often and easy. I am going to try the gel cell and see if it might last longer than 2 or 3 years which is what I seem to get at the best out replacement batteries for the ATV's.

Wow, quite a few ATVs. I thought you guys would have some. :thumb:

I don't have any pics of it, but I bought a Suzuki 700 King Quad. I only got home with it last night and it was snowing and the wind was blowing about 20 mph, so I didn't exactly ride it much. Maybe I can play on it a bit more today. It has 27" Mud Lites on ITP wheels. They seem to grip relatively well.

Kawasaki Brute Force 750 and Honda Foreman 450 ES which has been indestructible

Hey, let us know how that works out if you don't mind. I need batteries in both of my jet skis and I've been told that the gel cell batteries would be the way to go. I've not looked into them before.

BTW, sweet ATV corral :D

As opposed to most purchase, I really didn't spend much time at all researching ATVs before I bought this King Quad. Do you feel that the Suzuki machines are pretty good?

ABSOLUTELY!

Now, I'm a bit rusty on the details but if I recall correctly, the 700 Suzuki actually has the Kawasaki 700 power plant and possibly a lot more.
A few years back, Suzuki and Kawasaki did some sort of merge. At the time and as I recall, Suzuki re-badged the Kaw 700 to create their 700 King Quad. Kawasaki re-badged the small Suzuki machines (50 and maybe the 80cc). The mid-sized machines (125-500cc) remained where Kaw and Suzuki kept their own. Arctic Cat used Suzuki power plants for years as well but I think they now have their own.

Be advised: Although it "looks" like a utility ATV, it has enough torque to the wheels that when the tires can grab (e.g. pavement), out of the hole, you can stand the machine up and/or flip it over backwards. Don't ask how I know...

Not so true with the King Quad. Kawasaki and Suzuki had some separation about the time of the King Quad. The Suzuki KQ is a proprietary single cylinder, where pre-2005 they were 2 cylinders like the Kaw.

I stand corrected and new I was rusty... I believe it was the Suzuki Twin Peaks 700 that used the Kaw engine.

If you get what you pay for, the gell cell battery should be a lot better. At NAPA yesterday the regular acid filled battery was about $45.00 and the gel cell was about $80.00. It will be worth the price if it lasts 4 years instead of the usual two I have been getting. The OEM battery from Polaris was acid filled and it out lasted the replacements by several years. Picking a battery brand is like gambling, maybe it will maybe it won't last.

Here are some pics of my new (to me) ATV. Sorry for the poor picture quality. They were taken from my phone. I'd just rinsed the snow and mud off and changed the oil and filter. In one shot you can see where I still have the skid plate hanging down where I haven't put it back on yet. The full aluminum skid plates are nice except when you go to change the oil and filter...
