Decided to pull the differential brake bands assuming that was my issue steering at the end of last season. Opened the hatch and “WTF are those marks on the diffy !!

The brake bands look fine…….looks like the pinion gear moved!!! I’m going to look at the bearings, check the nut (didn’t mess with when rebuilding machine except to replace oil seal….could it of backed off?). Gears look ok……thoughts?

Certainly looks like the pinion moved endways, be interesting to see what's cooking with the spacer and shims / bearings Was the pinion nut wired / cotter pinned ? J5 Bombardier

Pulled up assembly…..didn’t see any shims on threaded shaft……uh oh! Will need to see who carries these….any help much appreciated!

Shims I'm talking about are against the spacer which is between the bearing inner races, giving you the ability to adjust pinion preload. You wouldn't see them when just doing a pinion seal.

Concur…..I ordered a new set or bearings, races and shims through Cyncon in NY. (Didn’t know who else to call….miss Brad‘s sage advice….and being Johnny on the spot for all of our needs…truly miss the man).

Got into the differential this weekend….got VERY lucky. The nut on the pinion gear backed off (it’s not castellated nor is there a cotter pin to go through the shaft, it’s an interference fit so I assumed it was tight when removing) no visible damage to the pinion or crown gear….only aluminum chips in the oil from where the pinion gear dug into the spacers. Have no idea how that nut backed off….but I used red loctite to put it back on (making sure the bearings weren‘t too tight, little to no play).

Replaced the brake bands (Cyncon had them….eye watering what they cost), they were a little different then the ones I have (mate together with a hitch vs the linkage in the original ones).

Decided to replace the trans filter to see if any aluminum chips were caught….EMPTY, no fluid! Realized I never primed/burped the pump when rebuilding…..got lucky again, it still works (phew). I manually filled the trans cooler and hoses…..then put a drill on the drive shaft….ran forward and backwards….it’s primed! I’m tempted to put a psi/temp gauge on the cooler lines (did this on the SW 48…slacked on the Bombi….🤔).

Having fun!
