Bombi BR100 restoration HELP

Natey

Member
I recently purchased a pair of BR100 snow machines for what I thought was a fair price. However machines were disassembled by previous owners and painted. I bought these machines completely dissembled and being that I didnt do the work myself I'm not really sure where to start for reassembly. Wondering if anyone has any resources or service manuals for these machines.
Thank you

Welcome!

I would spend a couple hours digging through the threads on our site......it’s a treasure chest of info.

This is in our manual section just below the restoration section:

http://www.goldcordmine.com/manuals/Bomb BR100 Plus/

I’m restoring a Bombardier Bombi (the baby brother of the BR100).....truly great machines!

Please post pictures of what you have.......there a dozens of folks in here who have rebuilt those beauts. Also, your best friend when it comes to parts and knowledge is Brad at Mn-outdoors.com.....he’s helped with parts and repair strategies that have saved me $$$$ and a lot of time.

Have fun! Welcome again.

Thank you I will check out those manuals. I will definitely post some pictures once I get in my shop and start working on her, I'm headed up north this weekend to pick them up and all the parts that go with them, fingers crossed hopefully most the parts are there.

I always find it easiest to do the edges first.

Good luck on putting your puzzle together. Take lots of pictures.

I'm not even sure on the year yet, I am going to pick both of them up tomorrow in Massachusetts, I am from CT. I didnt ask a whole lot of questions i payed 3k for the pair of them, which seemed fair? The first machine has motor and transmission still in it, and tracks are on it, looks to me like mainly just needs cab put back ok and seats installed. The second machine has no motor or transmission however has everything else tracks, cab etc. Both machines still have hydraulic setups in front and rear.

Ooooooooooh

A cat puzzle....
These machines are not that complicated.....

As mentioned...the various threads should provide all the needed info to get things heading in the right direction.

PICTURES OF THE LITTLE BEASTIES WOULD BE GREAT :thumbup::hammer::hammer::hammer:

Just got them picked up today they are in worse shape than a ithought, but did come with lots of parts and one definitely seems fixable. I got most the parts picked up but do have to make one more trip to get doors, glass, and one more cab piece. Uploaded a few rough pictures so you can see what I'm working with.

I've seen worse be turned into show pieces. It's going to take some work, but you have a good prospect project.

Mine was likely worse off when I got it

You have what looks like a great cat puzzle

Both tracks or more ????
Tracks can be a spendy proposition when you need to build them from scratch

Looking good
Going to be great fun to see this project move ahead. :hammer::hammer::hammer:

What kind of machine is yours any finished pictures? I have 2 sets of tracks and they look fairly new no dryrot, aluminum cleats seems decent. For an update I just got it running after about an hour of tinkering has been sitting for 3 years inside of a garage so far so good. However before I can attempt to drive i noticed the nylon drive gears for the track are broken apart, the previous owner gave me new ones not sure how to go about replacing I would imagine tracks has to be removed?
Thanks

Looks like you got a Bombi and a BR100! If the tracks are in good shape, that’s $3k by itself. If you could, take a bunch of pictures of both machines and parts....we’ll help you identify each part.

Great score!

Not finished yet.

Started life as a Thiokol 2100 groomer.

It's now what ya call a "FRANKENCAT"

Has an S10 chevy cab on it.

Small block Chevy power

Just started on building all new custom tracks.

Piccy of the cat with its Chevy cab.

A roll your own is a real adventure.....

Have a great time with your Cat puzzle.

At least you should have all the pieces.

I have to dream up whats next and then build it... :hammer::hammer::hammer:

Here are some more pictures of what im working with everything is kind of a mess right now but its all there, only things i do not have pictures of yet is the doors and the fiberglass front nose that belongs to the other cab because i have not picked that stuff up yet. i would really like to figure out exactly what im working with here a bombi or a br100? Im guessing by looking at the cabs and wiring harnesses that the 2 piece cab would go onto the machine im currently working on that still has a motor and transmission in it.
thank you

Hi Natey

That looks right....the two part cab (nose and hard top) go to the frame with engine in it (that’s what I’m rebuilding right now under “Bombardier Bombi Restoration”...same machine). Those tracks look pristine, no frayed rubber or cracks that is visible in pictures.

The second cab looks like it goes to a BR100 (cab with front hatch). If you have a pole barn or the like, spread out everything and inventory what you have.

On the Bombi, I’d pop open the differential cover for a status check...remove the steering levers 1st (about 20 or so 1/2 bolts).....and see what shape it’s in (it’s the heart of the machine....as well as the biggest ticket item if junked).

Edit: I just took another look at the picture showing the differential cover.....and there are no bolts holding the cover down......check and make sure THE DIFFERENTIAL IS IN THE MACHINE......and wasn’t parted out.
I’m hoping Boggie can jump in here....he’s rebuilt LOTS of Bombi’s.

What Bobcat said about the differential is spot on.....

Here are some pictures of what will scare the hell outta you if you find it....

Pull the oil drain plug and see what pours out.. mine had water.....and it gave me a very sick feeling in my gut...

Water is NOT WHAT YOU WANT TO SEE

I got fairly lucky.....The R&P and the compensator gears were all quite usable after cleaning.

All 14 ball bearings were junk though.

I would recommend a tear down and inspection of the diffy.

Even if things look OK after removing the access cover....you can't look at the beasrings.

Any degradation of the bearings will only get worse and can lead to a failure....And it will not be in a handy place.

EBAY is your friend for new old stock bearings.

The inner pinion bearing on my OC12 was quoted at $700

OMG NO.

Found a new in box one on ebay for $20 (That was with free shipping)

Even if the parts are all good....you will know they are and you can check the bands and drums too.

If the band lining is worn a lot it can be replaced easily at this time as well.

A good washout and fresh gaskets.....good to go....

Yesterday's progress I got both rubber drive gears replaced, which went a lot easier than I thought it was going to,a little bit of a pain in the ass bolting the tracks back together but not to bad.
Today I need to adjust the tension now on both tracks which im not exactly sure what they so be set at, right now I have both tensioner pistons in all the way.

Speaking of the front differential someone had the fuel tank out of this machine and I couldn't figure out why until yesterday when I saw that only 2 bolts where holding the front dif access cover on. I opened the cover up and looks as if someone has just replaced both brake bands they are not yet covered in oil or anything and drain plug was out also. Everything seems to look good in there no rust or metal chunks, not sure what exactly I should be looking for though.

I think for today's project I'm going to close access cover back up and fill with fluid from my understanding I can use tractor hydraulic/transmission fluid in there with no issues.
Thanks
Nate

Here are some pictures of new sprockets, and inside of front dif looks good to me just needs to good cleaning before I fill with fluid but no rust, and brake bands looks good.

That’s excellent news! Take lots of pictures as you go along.....post any you have questions on. The track should have a little flex in it (if to tight, you could bend the drive axle)....this is a question for Bombi users (I’m still in the refurbishment stage).

Those tracks look great! I recently finished one set...

See if you can find the end cap for the sprocket (in your picture, looks like it’s missing)....should look like this....

Those tracks look great, painting them really makes them look sharp especially with the red sprocket. I was wondering about that end cap the other machine I have has both of them on it, I guess I will have to steal them off of it, I thought it was strange one machine would have them and one wouldnt.

Hmmmm.....the machine you’re be working on (with differential and engine)......might be the BR100 (if the above picture sprocket is on the non engined machine).

What size engine is in the one you’re working on? I believe BR100 had a 2.3 vs the 1.6 in the Bombi.

Bob

Edit: The BR100 had the 1.6 in it as well, BR100+ had the 2.3. Hoping other Bombi owners will chime in to find the difference between the BR100 and Bombi (besides the cab).

Looking great.

Personally I would pull that diffy apart....

I see some pine needles and other crap.

If one errant bolt, nut or screw, rock or ???? has found its way into that box during the sojourn with the lid loose could spell disaster.

Anything hard going through the gears will destroy a many thousands of $$$ gear box.

Wash all the parts and inspect the bearings.

I can see a bit of rust on a few parts.

A rust spot on a bearing will doom it to failure....not if...just when......

The bands look like they have a lot of life left.....

Sweet deal.....

I definitely understand where you are coming from, what I ended up doing which hopefully I wont regret is cleaning everything in the differentional real good I flushed it out a couple times wiped everything down with rags and repeated that process a couple times. After that I vacuumed all the spots in could get with my hand to get alpine needles Deere etc, then I got a magnet and went through everything checking for parts that might have been dropped inside. Its filled with fluid now and hopefully wont have any issues....... I still have to adjust the brake bands once I get motor running better than it is now...

Bob
Yes my understanding is the Br100 and a bombi would have a 1.6l motor and manual transmission, and a Br100+ would have a 2.3 and an automatic transmission. I was told by the previous owner that it was a BR100 but wasn't sure which one he was talking about. *update I just found the bombarider chasis number tag on machine I'm currently working on, maybe someone would be able to decode that if I posted a picture of it.

Well today I went to put fuel tank back in my machine or so I thought. I spent a couple days cleaning rust out of it and went to install it today and realized it is not the tank for this machine......

The tank fits perfect inside the cab piece of the br100, but does not fit in the bombi I guess straps are a whole different setup. Wondering if anyone has a picture of the correct tank for a bombi.

On a bright side I got a new water pump installed along with a 100amp 1 wire alternator had to make a custom bracket but made it wor, and put in an electric fuel pump. Also rebuild the carberator, new plugs, wires, points etc.

Drove for the first time today didnt go great it seems to steer decent and idle great but as soon as a load is put on the machine it backfires and sputters I was not able to get it into second gear without the machine stalling, so going to have to figure that one out.
